Inspiration

We were inspired by how screens are becoming ever increasingly integrated into education, while simultaneously soft skills such as speaking seem to be neglected more and more.

What it does

SpeakAndLearn teaches children to learn what they speak, and speak what they learn. It places an emphasis on making sure you are able to articulate your thoughts clearly and accurately using AI.

How we built it

We drew designs detailing what kind of activities would be most engaging for children while also being educational. We then built SpeakAndLearn using React, TypeScript, Tailwind, and Next.js. We used OpenAI's API in order to deliver our AI features. We used Supabase as our backend and data storage.

Challenges we ran into

The time constraint was our biggest challenge - but nonetheless we worked very hard to deliver a prototype that we're proud of within the short amount of time we were given.

We are proud of the technical features we have implemented, utilizing AI in order to accurately mark the cohesiveness and clearness of a user's response.

What we learned

We learned how to best utilize each other's skills in accordance to our depth of knowledge as many of us were in different points of our academic journey.

Business Model

SpeakAndLearn.ai will operate on a freemium model, offering a free tier with basic speaking exercises and AI feedback, while providing a premium subscription that unlocks advanced features such as personalized feedback, curriculum-aligned lessons, multilingual support, and detailed progress tracking. In addition to serving individual users, the platform will target schools and educational institutions through per-student or classroom-based licensing plans. To expand revenue streams, SpeakAndLearn.ai will also introduce add-on services, including AI-powered ESL coaching and custom progress reports aligned with educational standards, ensuring a flexible and scalable model that caters to both families and institutions.

Marketing Strategy

The marketing strategy will focus on reaching parents, educators, and ESL learners through strategic partnerships and language expansion. SpeakAndLearn.ai will collaborate with school boards, education-focused YouTubers, and schools to build trust and increase visibility. The platform will expand into multiple languages to cater to global audiences and will gamify the learning experience to boost engagement. To increase digital reach, the team will invest in SEO, paid advertising, and a referral program designed to encourage organic growth within homeschooling and ESL communities.

design decisions

We decided to use Next.js as our frontend and deployment because of its great reviews and ease of use. Moreover, our Team decided on using Supabase as the backend and data management service for this project. One team member mentions the useful features like easy data management, easy authentication setup and routing capabilities. Moreover, we decided to use AI from OpenAI. since one of our members had some spare tokens for that service and will definitely improve the overall experience of the product, since nowadays everything needs some support from Artificial Intelligence.

What's next for SpeakAndLearn.ai

What we plan for the future, is expanding our customer base to large organizations like Universities and Public and Private schools. Initial start by supporting parents with their primary child and hopefully build a good reputation to hopefully expand our customer base.
