Inspiration

Following the global pandemic many people have started to appreciate spending more time in nature, but have often struggled to explore all the paths and green spaces that their local area has to offer.

What it does

Seenic is a mobile application that is designed to give people recommendations on walking routes in their local area which are tailored to their personal preferences, as well as provide a platform to stay connected with their local community.

How we built it

We created Seenic using Ionic, a mobile app development platform. We designed the app by hand, going from brainstorming ideas to drawing out how each page of the app would be laid out.

Challenges we ran into

Both members of the team had never used Ionic before. Learning how to use it whilst simultaneously designing and discussing ideas for Seenic was a really exciting experience. Learning how to navigate the ionic interface, downloading and configuring all the needed software, had us running into some challenges, but nothing we couldn't handle with a bit of perseverance.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We spent a long time brainstorming ideas and trying to come up with a useful app that would help tackle an issue we were both passionate about and didn't already exist. After doing some research and bouncing ideas back and forth, we believe we found not only a gap in the market, but an app that could help so many people in such a simple way.

What we learned

We became far more proficient using GitHub and git commands. We also learnt how to use ionic and we implemented our app framework using React, which neither of us had ever used before either. We learnt how to use all these different methods and technology in such a short space of time, creating something we were both passionate about.

What's next for Seenic

Finish the implementation! Due to time and team members unfortunately not being able to take part, we were not able to implement all the features we wanted to. This includes the interactive map, syncing with fitbits and smartwatches, generally fleshing out the app a bit more. Once we've done that, we intend on doing some customer testing, trying out the app and asking for advice. We fully intend on making sure this app gets up on the ios and andriod app stores - we have both really fallen in love with this idea and want to see it materialised.
