Inspiration
Up to 45% of our efforts to recycle is wasted due to contamination (either it's not being recycled or it's getting shipped overseas to sort). We want to better understand what is recyclable, what the recycling process looks like, and how contamination effects recycling.
What it does
Our solution is to use computer vision and a mobile app to for consumers to use in the comfort of their homes. The app will scan and identify recyclable products and materials for the user. When the item is recyclable the user can learn about the process. When it's not recyclable the user can learn about public resources that can be used to find a waste location (e.g. trash bin, SAFE center, TerraCycle, etc...).
The application uses real-time data from the LA Sanitation department to provide feedback to users about the recycling performance (% contamination) of their waste shed and neighborhood.
