Inspiration
We noticed that accountants were constantly stuck between two extremes: overly complex ERP systems that require IT support, and rigid black-box software that lacks transparency. Most still fall back to Excel, manually creating sheets over and over. We wanted to create something that gives accountants control, flexibility, and transparency — without the repetitive grind.
What it does
LegoBook is a modular accounting platform that allows accountants to build workflows like Lego blocks. It combines:
- A library of ready-to-use templates (GL, AP/AR, Budget, Inventory)
- Drag-and-drop customization of modules
- Built-in audit trails for transparency
- Smart validations to reduce manual errors
It’s essentially the flexibility of Excel with the scalability of accounting software.
How we built it
We designed LegoBook as a template-driven, modular system where every component (ledger, report, formula, validation rule) is its own building block. These modules can be plugged together dynamically, letting accountants assemble their workflow without needing engineers. We focused on clear formulas, auditability, and real-time error detection.
Challenges we ran into
- Balancing simplicity and flexibility — making it powerful enough for professionals but still easy to use.
- Ensuring auditability while keeping formulas editable.
- Designing modules that are both reusable and customizable without overwhelming the user.
What we learned
- Accountants highly value control and transparency over “flashy automation.”
- Even with advanced tools, many still “default back to Excel” — so bridging that comfort zone is critical.
- A modular approach opens up community-driven template sharing, which could accelerate adoption.
What's next for LegoBook
- Expanding the template marketplace to cover more use cases.
- Adding collaboration features so teams can work together seamlessly.
- Partnering with accounting associations to pilot with real firms.
- Scaling LegoBook into a one-stop platform for financial operations.
