Inspiration
Students waste ₹500–1000/month due to groceries expiring in hostels. Feeling guilty about food waste, but there are no easy tools to manage it. Want to combine money-saving + sustainability for students.
What it does
Tracks expiry dates of groceries and leftovers. Suggests recipes to use the remaining food. Enables sharing/donating excess food. Gamifies food saving → Food Hero points & badges → Rewards.
How we built it
Designed a mobile-first, student-friendly interface. Integrated expiry reminders & recipe suggestions. Simple backend for tracking shared/donated food. Gamification logic → points, badges, streaks.
Challenges we ran into
Students often ignore alerts, making engagement difficult. Designing intuitive UI for multiple languages. Making the app lightweight & low-data for hostel networks. Mapping donation/sharing locations in real time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Fully functional conceptual mobile app workflow Shortlisted features that directly reduce student food waste Designed gamification to motivate sustainable behavior Validated practicality: easy to implement in hostels/PGs
What we learned
Small nudges + reminders can change student habits Gamification + social sharing improves engagement & awareness Importance of simplicity & minimalism for mobile-first apps Designing for Indian students = multi-language & low-data friendly
