Inspiration
I want people to feel like they could grow what they want while letting the app schedule tasks for them - kind of like a manufacturing execution system for home growers. Helping people to become more self-sufficient during a time of economic crisis by growing food, and making an income on selling it.
What it does
You pick what you want to grow and it gives you a schedule of tasks to do each day. Shows a calendar for 2023 and guides the user on what to do each day for self-sufficiency.
How we built it
Javascript and HTML/CSS
Challenges we ran into
We initially believed we would build this in Django or React, but we were all totally new to each language. Even though they are both powerful and robust platforms, we need more time to learn the basics and utilize each platform. We had varying degrees of success learning the language, and we needed to switch platforms in order to get a minimum viable product.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to create a highly simplified version of the concept that gets the job done. There is a lot of potential for improvement but we are happy with the results!
What we learned
We learned the importance of being really comfortable with databases and commands resembling bash scripting. We spent a lot of time learning Django in particular. We managed to cover the official tutorial to some extent and are ready to learn more in the future.
What's next for Garden Scheduler
We can implement the app either in Django or React. In Django, we could create admin side functions for adding watering frequency, shade quantity, common pests, common diseases, ideal climate, etc for each crop. We could thus make the task scheduler much more sophisticated. We could also implement plant quantities that could be used to recommend how much water, nutrients, and plant spacing users should be aware of.
