Inspiration

What inspired us was the desire to become more active in the student community, as well as the disappointment we'd often feel because we would miss events as they weren’t marketed correctly.

What it does

Frolick Finder essentially streamlines the process of using Google Forms to sign up for events that are marketed to students through online platforms, by having them all in one place! In the context of Queen's University, our finder is to be used to find fun events happening on campus that otherwise go overlooked by many students. We want to make that information more accessible.

How we built it

We built our project first by coming up with various ideas, drawing a mind map diagram for the different states and transitions between pages, and had a general idea of what we wanted our platform to look like before we started coding in Python (through Streamlit, a Python-based library; introduced to us briefly in the beginner tutorials. We were immediately fascinated!). That is where we finalized the UI, extra mechanics, and more.

Challenges we ran into

We faced many challenges. We didn’t have much experience in this subject of computer science at all, and so learning the platform at first was a huge challenge. On top of that, we had to figure out how to code on one file, so figuring out Live Share was one issue we had; once we started to gain momentum in finishing our project, we kept running into issues for creating/deleting events as well as getting the right font and background colors. Additionally, one of our group members, Sophie, felt nauseous halfway through and had to take a break for 4 hours, meaning that valuable time was lost, and yet she came back to Jeffrey and powered through (we are so proud of her).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the entire process. The fact that we even ended up participating was somewhat of a surprise, and on top of that, we put more effort into this project than a school project because we wanted to see good results. We’re proud of ourselves for taking on the challenge, for learning something new, and for our final project.

What we learned

We learned so much. Going into this experience, none of us had any previous experience with Streamlit or SQLite3, so learning the fundamentals and immediately putting them to use was difficult but satisfying in the end!

What's next for Frolick Finder

We just came up with the idea within the last 24 hours, and so the interface and its capabilities still seem new. It could possibly expand to have connections with social media platforms, or have another type of communication to aid its primary purpose; or perhaps have a map navigation feature. The possibilities are endless.
