Inspiration

Fiber arts is a historically female-led craft and we decided to explore a women dominated space by innovating it during a hackathon meant to uplift women in a male dominated space. There are not many fiber art apps that can help artists with their projects, with features like counting rows and stitches and keeping track of yarn type and price. We personally are both fiber artists and have noticed a gap in innovation here. We want to make a free, user-friendly app that aims to make counting stitches/rows more efficient. Our main new feature that we want to add is an interactive lockscreen widget which allows artists to update their counters without having to unlock their phone and get distracted by other notifications. This encourages the meditative, slow-fashion process of fiber arts, something we are both passionate about.

What it does

This mobile app holds a list of ongoing projects and allows users to count rows and stitches for each project. Users can also sort their list by "favorites" mode.

How we built it

We first designed wireframes in Procreate. Then we researched our options for a language, and decided on Swift for iOS because of their widget capabilities. We followed tutorials to learn the Swift language and the xcode environment, because neither of us have used it before.

Challenges we ran into

Swift was challenging, especially using the navigation feature, getting our handmade graphics to function as the background, and implementing the timers and widgets.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are so proud that we were able to code a basic app in Swift within the time limit using our own graphics.

What we learned

We learned how to use Swift and xcode as well as what iOS is capable of. We also learned how to efficiently delegate tasks and how to realize when a task was too complex to finish within the timeframe.

What's next for Fiber First

There are many features that we wanted to add to our app. Mainly, we were not yet able to implement an interactive lockscreen widget, which would reduce screen time by minimizing distractions. We also want to add options to add new projects, archive old projects, fix the timer functionality, edit how much time a project has taken so far, add descriptions and yarn material for each project, and much more. We have SO many ideas to make fiber arts more accessible!
