Feelspace: A Privacy-First Mental Health Platform
The Problem
Most mental health apps assume users are already comfortable opening up. In reality, the hardest step is admitting how you feel in the first place. When I struggled with stress and anxiety, I didn’t lack resources — I lacked a space where I could be honest without feeling exposed or judged.
That gap became Feelspace.
The Solution
Feelspace is an anonymous, privacy-first mental health app designed to make emotional expression safe before it becomes social.
There are:
- No profiles
- No personal data collection
- No pressure to perform
Users can vent anonymously in themed rooms, track moods over time, and journal privately in a secure draft vault. The core principle is simple: when people feel protected, they are more honest — and honesty is where healing begins.
Ethical AI by Design
Mental health technology requires restraint. In Feelspace, AI does not diagnose or replace professional care. Instead, it gently prompts reflection using principles inspired by Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
The system detects emotional patterns in user input and generates context-aware reflections that slow users down and encourage processing. Designing this required careful boundary-setting: the AI supports without overstepping, especially in moments where trust is fragile.
Technical Architecture
Feelspace is built with Expo + React Native (TypeScript), optimized for performance, accessibility, and reliability.
Key systems include:
- Offline-first architecture with automatic sync
- Fully anonymous authentication
- Secure private journaling vault
- Layered content moderation and rate limiting
- Automatic crisis-resource redirection without storing personal data
One of the most technically complex challenges was building a moderation system that protects users while preserving anonymity. Balancing privacy and safety required iterative system design and careful implementation.
What I Learned
The hardest decision was what not to build.
Early versions were feature-heavy but emotionally overwhelming. By simplifying the interface, refining microinteractions, and tightening language, the experience became calmer and more human. I learned that in mental health design, the best technology is often invisible.
Impact
Feelspace sits at the intersection of computer science, ethical AI, and mental health advocacy. It is not a replacement for therapy. It is a first step — a quiet, protected space where people can unload thoughts, recognize patterns, and feel less alone.
Building Feelspace challenged me to think beyond what technology can do — and focus instead on what it should do when real people are vulnerable on the other side of the screen.
