Solar Runner 🚀✨

Inspiration

I was inspired by the wonders of space exploration and the desire to make learning about the universe fun and interactive. Games like Flappy Bird and Subway Surfers influenced our endless scroller mechanics and planetary discovery system.

What It Does

Solar Runner is an endless space scroller where players navigate through space, dodge obstacles, and discover planets. Each discovered planet unlocks interesting facts, making the game both engaging and educational.

How I Built It

I developed the game using Greenfoot and programmed it in Java. The visuals were created with Greenfoots API, and I integrated multiple in-memory data structures to store planetary information for an educational experience.

Challenges I Ran Into

  • Balancing difficulty to keep gameplay challenging but fair.
  • Optimizing performance for smooth scrolling and responsive controls.
  • Designing an engaging way to present planetary facts without over. disrupting gameplay.

Accomplishments That I am Proud Of

  • Successfully blending entertainment with education in a seamless experience.
  • Creating a visually appealing and dynamic space environment.
  • Implementing a procedural generation system for infinite exploration.

What I Learned

  • Best practices for developing an endless scroller with procedural elements.
  • How to optimize game performance for a smooth user experience.
  • Effective ways to integrate educational content into a fast-paced game.
  • Different methods to utilize Greenfoot

What's Next for Solar Runner

  • More planets and celestial phenomena to discover.
  • Customizable ships and more power-ups.
  • Better Leaderboards and multiplayer features for competitive play.
  • Enhanced visuals and sound effects for a more immersive experience.
