Inspiration

In professional settings, women often face challenges with how communication is perceived. They often feel pressured to write emails filled with hedging, softeners, and unnecessary apologies that can sometimes undermine their authority and confidence. We wanted to create a website to help address this aspect of gender inequality in the workplace by empowering women to communicate more confidently and directly.

How We Built It

E-Male was built using a combination of modern web development technologies and advanced AI techniques:

  • Frontend: We built the user interface with React, ensuring a responsive and user-friendly design. Material-UI components were used to maintain consistency and modern aesthetics.
  • Backend: The backend is powered by Node.js and Express, handling API requests and managing the integration with our AI rewriting engine.
  • AI Engine: Our AI model is built on top of state-of-the-art NLP libraries and was fine-tuned using a dataset of professional emails. The model leverages deep learning techniques to understand context and generate assertive language without compromising clarity or professionalism.
  • Deployment: We used Docker containers to ensure a consistent environment across development and production. The application is hosted on a scalable cloud platform, enabling efficient handling of user requests.

Challenges We Faced

  • Tone Calibration: One of our biggest challenges was ensuring that the AI-generated responses maintained a balance between assertiveness and professionalism. We spent significant time fine-tuning the model with input from language experts and business professionals.
  • Bias Mitigation: Given the sensitive nature of gender communication, ensuring that the AI did not reinforce any unintended biases was critical. This required rigorous testing and iterative adjustments to our training datasets.
  • User Experience: Designing an interface that is both accessible and intuitive was paramount. Our user testing sessions helped us refine the workflow, making sure that the tool is straightforward and effective.
