- AI Powered Rewriting: Using a trained AI model, E-Male rewrites a given email in a more assertive tone for communications in a business setting.
- Multiple Tone Options: Lets users choose from mild or aggressive tones.
In professional settings, women often face challenges with how communication is perceived. They often feel pressured to write emails filled with hedging, softeners, and unnecessary apologies that can sometimes undermine their authority and confidence. We wanted to create a website to help address this aspect of gender inequality in the workplace by empowering women to communicate more confidently and directly.
Users can paste a professional email they might write that they feel contains too much hedging or fluff, and wish to make it more direct and confident in its delivery. After selecting their preferred assertiveness level, users receive an AI-generated revised message that maintains professionalism while projecting confidence.
E-Male was built using a combination of modern web development technologies and advanced AI techniques:
- Frontend: We built the user interface with React, ensuring a responsive and user-friendly design. Material-UI components were used to maintain consistency and modern aesthetics.
- Backend: The backend is powered by Node.js and Express, handling API requests and managing the integration with our AI rewriting engine.
- AI Engine: Our AI model is built on top of state-of-the-art NLP libraries and was fine-tuned using a dataset of professional emails. The model leverages deep learning techniques to understand context and generate assertive language without compromising clarity or professionalism.
- Deployment: We used Docker containers to ensure a consistent environment across development and production. The application is hosted on a scalable cloud platform, enabling efficient handling of user requests.
- Tone Calibration: One of our biggest challenges was ensuring that the AI-generated responses maintained a balance between assertiveness and professionalism. We spent significant time fine-tuning the model with input from language experts and business professionals.
- Bias Mitigation: Given the sensitive nature of gender communication, ensuring that the AI did not reinforce any unintended biases was critical. This required rigorous testing and iterative adjustments to our training datasets.
- User Experience: Designing an interface that is both accessible and intuitive was paramount. Our user testing sessions helped us refine the workflow, making sure that the tool is straightforward and effective.
We have exciting plans for the future of E-Male:
- Expanded Tone Options: Incorporating more nuanced tone selections (e.g., empathetic assertiveness or diplomatic directness) to cater to a broader range of professional scenarios.
- Language Support: Expanding the AI’s capabilities to support multiple languages, thereby assisting a global audience.
- Integration: Developing plugins for popular email clients and collaboration tools, making it easier for users to integrate E-Male into their daily workflow.
- Feedback Loop: Creating a mechanism for users to provide feedback directly on AI revisions, which will help us continually improve the model.
