Inspiration

Flamingo was born from the joy of sharing travel moments with friends and family. We envisioned a platform where you could revisit your own memories through spatial photos and videos and tell your stories to others, no matter the distance. The app should inspire you to visit new places and fuel your wanderlust.

What it does

Flamingo offers a playful and interactive way to tell your friends about your adventures. It is about viewing photos, sharing passion and remembering your greatest moments. The app enables you to explore your travel history on an interactive 3D globe, decorated with models of popular buildings and landmarks.

How we built it

Our journey in building Flamingo allowed us to take advantage of the latest features of Meta Quest 3, such as its mixed reality and hand tracking capabilities. We combined creative and technical approach, using Unity for complex interactions, ShapesXR for rapid prototyping, and Blender for detailed modeling like our 3D map and interactive objects.

Challenges we ran into

Creating a visually appealing and interactive 3D globe was a significant technical hurdle we had to overcome. We wanted to strike a balance between aesthetics and usability to ensure a smooth user experience. Technical issues on the first day led to some frustration, but also great learning.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

We are happy to present a beautiful interactive globe and a 3D map with playful details. We wisely combined a proof-of-concept implementation in Unity with a demonstration of the user interface and interactions in ShapesXR. We showed what a social platform for sharing travel memories could feel like and how mixed reality can enhance the way you relive your travel memories with your family and friends.

What we learned

We learned the importance of prioritising features and focusing on what really improves the experience. Simplicity often trumps complexity, especially when it comes to user engagement. By focusing on the most critical features, we created an experience that was simple yet meaningful. Our collaborative process was full of learning opportunities, from discovering new tools to refining our workflows, all while fostering a fun and creative atmosphere.

What’s next for Flamingo

Looking ahead, we plan to introduce ways to upload photos directly from the cloud. We are also working on integrating sharing features to make it easy for users to share their virtual experiences on social media. In addition, customisation options to personalise journeys and virtual memories, making each journey unique to you, would enhance the developed experience.
