Ideathon for a mental health app

Inspiration

I knew a guy named Cale in middle school who emphasized the importance of not neglecting my own mental health while pushing myself to do my best academically. So, I decided to dedicate a rough draft for a mental health app idea I came up with to him for my ideathon.

What it does

In theory, Cale is meant to act as a mental health app that provides users with a plethora of features. Including, but not limited to:

  • Access to an encyclopedia of every mental health disorder listed in the DSM-5-TR with access to information from licensed mental health professionals that specialize in research regarding those respective mental health disorders and/or intellectual disabilities/neurodevelopmental disorders
  • A survey offered to new users made by licensed mental health professionals to help personalize results for users within the app and get them into contact with therapists or treatments that are a right fit for them * Breathing exercises to relieve stress
  • Chatrooms and communities to connect with people who may be struggling with similar issues to the individual user
  • Time management tools for individuals who may struggle with productivity due to things like ADHD
  • Calendars and kind messages that can be displayed to users overcoming addiction
  • Custom alarm clock sounds that are actually good for the brain

How I built it

I used Google Slides to make a detailed presentation of my app proposal and used VS Code to make and run a program for a simple prototype that showcases several features that would be available to users if the Cale app was made as describes in my presentation.

Challenges I ran into

I struggled with combining files in python to make a rough draft of a few features my app would have.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I managed to come up with a unique idea for an app that can help a lot of people due to the poor mental health that many people have worldwide.

What I learned

I've learned a lot of data from various sources that highly suggest we're in the midst of a mental health crisis due to a plethora of factors.

What's next for Cale App Presentation

Hopefully, in the foreseeable future I can get the resources, skills, and other people necessary to make this app idea a reality to help many people across the globe.
