Inspiration

Growing up in rural India, I witnessed the challenges that many children in our community faced due to their inability to afford textbooks. This experience struck a chord with me, and after every grade, I took it upon myself to donate my textbooks to these students. The gratitude in their eyes and the realization that such a simple act could make a significant difference in their education inspired me greatly.

What it does

"Book Portal" is an initiative designed to make education more accessible in rural areas, addressing a significant issue: the limited availability of textbooks. It serves as a digital platform that connects students in need of textbooks with individuals willing to share these valuable learning materials. Additionally, the app has the option to switch the displayed language to accommodate diverse students as many rural students are not familiar with english. The app bridges the gap, enabling the exchange of educational resources and ensuring fair access to quality education for students in rural areas.

How we built it

The building process began with assessing the problem and sketching the User Interface (UI). I then proceeded to create an interactive prototype of the app, ensuring it was user-friendly and effective in connecting students with textbooks, while also offering multi-language support. Throughout this process, user feedback was collected and utilized to make several enhancements and improvements to the prototype.

Challenges we ran into

The journey came with its share of challenges. Balancing what to include and omit in the prototype was a challenging task, as it required us to strike a delicate balance between showcasing core functionality and avoiding unnecessary complexity. Additionally, the limited development time, coupled with the need to encapsulate the project's essence within a two-minute video, required a thoughtful approach to ensure the presented functionalities were practically achievable within constraints.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One of my proudest accomplishments is turning the idea into a tangible prototype that mirrors the simplicity and impact of sharing textbooks. Book Portal is not just an app; it is a testament to the potential for positive change when driven by a commitment to promoting accessible education in rural areas.

What we learned

Along the process, I learned the importance of prioritizing user needs and preferences in the design. Conducting user testing and feedback sessions revealed how crucial it is to create a product that resonates with its intended audience. From the technical perspective, I developed skills in UI/UX design and prototyping tools and learned to navigate technical challenges with greater confidence.

What's next for Book Portal

Moving forward, the goal is to transform the prototype into a fully functional app, and further enhance the user experience through feedback. Additionally, new features will be added, including but not limited to a “Notify Me” notification, which will alert the user when a specific book is added to their region, accessibility features to help users with disabilities, and personalized book recommendations. The app will eventually expand beyond textbooks to include other educational resources like stationary and digital materials.
