Description
Personalized Discovery Meets BigScreen Innovation.
In March 2025, ZDF launched its completely redesigned streaming portal, developed with a “BigScreen first” approach to meet the evolving expectations of modern audiences. The relaunch was preceded by a full conceptual overhaul, multi-stage UX testing, and the creation of a new technical foundation – resulting in a cross-platform experience optimized for Smart TVs.
At the heart of the new platform lies a smart metadata concept that makes content easier to find, better structured and more meaningfully connected. Combined with revised algorithms it enables personalized, usage-based recommendations that guide users to relevant content based on their interests and viewing behavior.
The platform features a modern design with large visuals, minimal text, automatic playback and high performance on the BigScreen. It transforms passive viewing into an engaging and intuitive experience.
A standout feature is Zapping, winner of the HbbTV Symposium Award 2023. It introduces themed channels that combine the spontaneity of linear TV with the discovery potential of streaming, bridging the gap between linear habits and digital possibilities. The HbbTV application also includes sustainability features, helping users make greener choices while streaming.
Technically, the platform runs on a unified codebase across HbbTV, CTV, and third-party apps like SKY, Magenta, and Fire TV. Its architecture ensures high-performance playback – even on older devices – maximizing reach and compatibility.
Of course, as expected and appreciated by our users, all color buttons are assigned to the established features (green: content recommendations, blue: instant restart, yellow: accessibility options).
With its user-centric design, intelligent content architecture, and innovative features, the ZDF streaming platform sets a new benchmark for public service media in the digital age and actively leads the way into the streaming future.
Impact
ZDF’s new streaming portal marks a decisive step in transforming the television landscape. By prioritizing digital-first viewing and launching with a “BigScreen first” approach, ZDF actively drives the shift from linear broadcasting to personalized streaming – making public service media more accessible, relevant, and future-ready.
The platform’s smart metadata architecture and usage-based recommendations empower users to discover content tailored to their interests, fostering deeper engagement and media literacy. With features like Zapping, which blends lean-back viewing with curated thematic channels, ZDF bridges the gap between traditional habits and digital exploration – encouraging audiences to embrace streaming without losing the comfort of linear TV.
Technically inclusive and socially conscious, the platform supports a wide range of devices and includes sustainability features that promote responsible media consumption. By offering content personalized, but diverse and cross-thematic, ZDF strengthens democratic discourse and cultural participation – especially among younger audiences.
This relaunch positions ZDF not only as a digital innovator but as a public service leader shaping the future of media in a connected society.
