Defensible Space Solutions
WILDFIRE PREVENTION
Since 2012 when my home failed a random CAL FIRE defensible space inspection for having moss on my roof; I have been cleaning up homes and properties protecting them from wildfires, starting with my own of course. That’s when what is known today as Defensible Space Solutions was born. Five years later one of my family members experienced total devastation in the 2017 Redwood Complex Fire.
I am a lifelong resident of Mendocino County with strong ties to Redwood Valley, Ukiah, Willits and the Coast. I am also a journeyman carpenter and I bring with me eleven years of experience in the construction trades to the business. In 2023 I attended a training course and received a certificate for Assessing Structure Ignition Potential from Wildfire issued by the National Fire Protection Association.

5 Facts About Wildfires
IS YOUR SPACE READY
- FACT #1
Extreme wildfires overwhelm firefighters resulting in no fire protection for most homes. The term Defensible Space assumes a firefighter presence. When wildfires ignite we are told to evacuate, exacerbating the lack of fire protection. Equally Important to Defensible Space, if not more so, is the Home Ignition Zone which assumes no available fire protection.
- FACT #2
If homes don’t ignite, homes don’t burn.
- FACT #3
Firebrands, more commonly known as embers can start new fires more than a mile downwind from an intense flaming front.
- FACT #4
Firebrands are the principal ignition source for directly igniting structures and igniting surface fires that spread to contact and ignite structures.
- FACT #5
Wildfires are inevitable. Human activities and lighting have been the principal ignitions of wildfires for millenia.

Discing is a farming practice that involves cultivating soil with a disc harrow to break up clumps, mix in crop residue, and prepare a seed bed. It is often used as a secondary tillage operation after plowing to smooth the soil surface and can also be used to control weeds. I offer discing as an added layer of fire protection in addition to high weed tractor mowing.
Home Hardening
Retrofit foundation, gable and eve venting, install soffit, install non combustible gutter guards and gutters to meet current fire codes. Seal gaps in foundations, walls, and roof systems for rodent control.
Tree Trimming
View Enhancements. Trim branches away from structures to maintain space to the sides and above roof.
