Policy Review of the ARC National Competitive Grants Program

The DARE team recently submitted a response to the ARC’s Review of the National Competitive Grants Program.

Despite some encouraging aspects to the proposed restructure, we are particularly concerned about the proposed discontinuation of industry-linked programs. At a time when industry investment in R&D is declining, maintaining strong industry engagement is more important than ever.

Australia’s Strategic Examination of Research and Development

DARE recently submitted a response to the Department of Industry, Science and Resources’ Strategic Examination of Research and Development (R&D) consultation.

Our recommendations focus on strengthening industry-university collaboration through co-designed research, innovation hubs, expanded industry placements and dedicated funding for research translation roles.

Embracing Uncertainty Quantification: A Smarter Future for Water Management

This World Water Day, DARE Director Willem Vervoort reflects on the importance of uncertainty quantification in water management.

By embracing uncertainty quantification, we can improve data quality, refine sampling and monitoring approaches, and make more informed water management decisions – ensuring greater resilience in the face of climate change.

Showcasing Multidisciplinary Data Science for the Future

The annual DARE Symposium showcased the innovative research of our PhD candidates, who are harnessing Data Science to tackle pressing environmental challenges.

The variety of presentations demonstrated the impact of applying sophisticated data science methods for mineral resource estimation, optimising hydrological modelling, species occurrence prediction, e-waste recycling and more.

DARE’s Annual Symposium – 4 February

You’re invited to the final DARE Symposium – Showcasing Multidisciplinary Data Science for the Future!

This special event highlights five years of innovation, collaboration and impact. DARE has trained a new generation of data scientists equipped to tackle critical challenges in the environment and resource sectors. We are delighted to welcome Professor Sally Cripps, founder and inaugural Director of DARE, as our keynote speaker.

DARE Postpones Research Hub Application

After considerable reflection and careful evaluation, we have made the difficult decision to delay the DARE Research Hub application and not to proceed with the proposal for the 2025 round.

The DARE Training Centre is committed to working with all our partners (and potential new partners) across disciplines and industries to deliver impactful outcomes that benefit Australia’s natural resources and environments.

ABC News: Snowy 2.0 Pumped-Hydro Scheme More Resilient to Climate Change

In a recent radio interview and article with ABC South East NSW, DARE Director and leading hydrologist, Willem Vervoort discussed the Snowy 2.0 and its resilience to climate change.

Future projections for the alpine climate indicate extended droughts leading to water shortages, interspersed with periods of intense rainfall resulting in water surpluses.

Uncertainty Quantification Crucial in National Water Agreement

The National Water Agreement is an important step and will be one of the great achievements in Australian water management in the last decade.

Among other suggestions, DARE Director Willem Vervoort highlights the need for uncertainty quantification to aid in understanding the limitations of simulation models and data.

DARE Launches Plans for Multidisciplinary Research Hub

Continuing the DARE Centre’s legacy, the DARE Research Hub will develop novel Data Science to support industry in solving complex environmental challenges.

We aim to empower industry partners to understand, quantify and contextualise uncertainty using data science, driving evidence-based decisions to safeguard Australia’s natural resources.

World Water Day: Equitable and Sustainable Water Management

On World Water Day, DARE Director Prof Willem Vervoort highlights that it continues to be a priority to improve how we measure water resources and to improve model predictions across our large catchments, otherwise we will continue in failing to deliver equitable water management.

“Having a clear picture of the available resources is key to resilience and preparedness for the future.”

DARE Thriving in Uncertainty and Quantifying Change in Natural Resources

The annual DARE Symposium is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our impactful research addressing environmental challenges using sophisticated data science methodologies.

This year’s program covered a diverse range of topics from deep-sea biota identification and ecological forecasting, to symbolic data analysis, causal discovery, and spatial-temporal quantile regression.

DARE’s Annual Symposium – 8 February

You’re invited to the DARE Symposium showcasing work from our multidisciplinary, world-class data scientists!

Join us in welcoming keynote speaker, Professor Scott Sisson, a globally recognised expert in computational and Bayesian statistics. Explore the impactful initiatives DARE researchers, who are leveraging sophisticated data science methodologies to confront Australia’s critical biodiversity, mineral sector, and water security challenges.
