I grew up celebrating Channukah, which was never a big holiday. We'd light the candles, open a present or two, and get on with the night. Now that I have a daughter, Channukah still isn't a big holiday, but I do a little more than what I did with my parents. We light the candles, and by we I mean I light the candles. I love my Daikini Baby, but I'm not letting her handle a lit candle at 2.5. ;) I also have a menorah tapestry complete with candles and flames made of felt. It all attaches with velcro. That's the menorah I let her light. Every night of Channukah I make a different fried food. We open a present each night. It's a very low-key affair.
I started celebrating Yule in College. Some years I've had a tree, some years I've just had candles (once I had a candle that was shaped like a log). I always put up lights. I adore holiday lights and decorations, mostly because I didn't grow up with them and they always looked magical to me. They still do. My favourite lights are the blue ones, but I like the purple and jewel tone ones too. For several years I would burn the previous years' Yule log. Some years I stay up to see the return of the Sun, but mostly I just get up very early. There are gifts, music, and I usually make some kind of roasted meat.
Winter is my second favourite season. I love how so many people are so giving and kind and lovely to be around, and I wish that those feelings could last year round.
Which December holidays do you celebrate, and why?
