Thank you for your interest in helping us create more monsters to haunt the Institute halls! Below you will find a helpful form to use in submitting your monster ideas and some guidelines about how to post. Once submitted, the Monster NPC mods and the Head Mods must approve your suggestion before it is implemented in part or in full. We will answer your suggestions as soon as we are able, but please understand it may take some time for all parties to review and discuss the information.

RULES
1) All monsters must be original creations.
At this time, we are unable to approve any canon monsters. We understand that there has been some interest in bringing in canon-specific monsters, but in the interest of keeping with the current monster roster, they are not allowed for now. However, if there is a sufficient number of requests and interest, this may change at a later date.

2) Questions are allowed in this post with one stipulation.
If you have questions regarding monsters (rather than a suggestion), they are allowed in this post. However, you must put the word QUESTION in the comment title. This is to help the mods distinguish between suggestions and questions, and to help you get your question answered in a timely fashion.

3) Responding to suggestions with suggestions of your own is allowed and encouraged.
We like to get as much input as possible from the players when it comes to creating new monsters, so feel free to step in and talk about the suggestions if you have any constructive input, critique, or additions. Please refrain from writing comments that do not lend any further information toward building the monster, but do let us know if you support the creature as an addition to the current roster!

4) Only players of the game are allowed to post.
Like the rule says, we apologize for any inconvenience, but we are only allowing current players of Damned to post their suggestions here.

If you read and agree to the above, then please proceed to the form below.

This is the official list of the applications that are physically in our inbox once applications have been opened, along with intentions to apply that we've received. DO NOT USE THIS PAGE FOR CLAIMING. This post is simply to hold the list and for reaction comments/squeeing over possible/received apps. All claims must be made over here for the sake of privacy. The list will be by character and series as usual, with a date next to each to indicate when the app was received. There will also be notes next to it to show its status. This will allow you to know if your application has been read already, if a second opinion for it has already been received, and if we're in the process of working on a response. Similarly, we'll make notes if it's pending for one reason or another so you have a better idea of how long the wait will be.

Received ApplicationsCollapse )

Intended ApplicationsCollapse )

Once again, this page is meant for public reactions to the list, so discussion and spamming is very much encouraged. Enjoy!

This page is being enstated as part of our trial open application period. This page is ONLY FOR CLAIMS. Comments are screened. People can comment here with their intent to apply. This is not a requirement, but it's helpful in that it gets the word out that your application will possibly be coming in (along with building up excitement) and also allows someone else to submit an intent to challenge in a timely manner. Even if you submit an intent to apply, you are not required to actually send in the application, though we'd prefer it if people commented only when they were relatively certain that they will be applying.

To make certain that competition is still possible, anyone can also comment here with an intent to challenge. If you see a name on the "Intended Application" or "Received Applicaton" list (over HERE) for a character that you also wish to apply for, you must then comment here letting us know that you are going to challenge that application. If the first application has already been received, you will have one week to get your challenge app in. If it's only an intent, then the time period will depend on when the first application comes in.

If a challenge comes up, the original applicant will be notified that their application has been challenged and that a response to their app may be delayed due to this.

Comments will be screened to hide the identity of applicants and challengers, though feel free to request that your username is shown on the list if you want people to know that it's you. As applications will be opening February 15th, we will be accepting both comments with intent to app and challenges to any listed intented applications now!

As this was requested by multiple people, we've decided to enstate a system where you can request for a switch of roommate if the current match-up isn't working out. However, we have a series of guidelines that need to be followed and requirements that need to be met before this can be allowed, as follows:

Guidelines and RulesCollapse )

And here is the form that both players will have to fill out and submit here in order to get a switch approved:

Character's Name: Name (username_here)
Roommate's Name: Name (username_here)
Links: Insert at least two links to attempted and/or failed threads, along with chat logs/email logs if there's an issue of unresponsiveness.
Explanation: Describe why you both decided you wanted to switch to different roommates. This can be brief and to the point.

NOTE: This is NOT where you tell us about problems caused by players and this is NOT an FAQ. If you'd like to alert us to rules being broken, please do so here. If you'd like to ask us general questions, please do so here.

Sometimes, we need your guys' help to let us know when problems need fixing. While we've always been glad to hear and respond to comments/suggestions about the game itself through IM, e-mail, and comments to mod posts, we've decided it's time to centralize all of those concerns in one post for ease of use for players and ease of reference for us. Of course, before you jump to comment on everything that's been bothering you, keep in mind that this game is a labor of love and we mods already spend much – possibly most – of our free time maintaining it. We're not using this as an excuse for bad modding, but we do want you guys to keep in mind just how much work a game like this requires as is. (Not that we'd want it any other way. ♥)

Here is where you comment and let us know whether you're holding out for SC or M-U! That way, when we randomize for either one, we'll only be including people who we know want it, and we won't run into problems where people would rather opt out in hopes of getting the other one, leaving us to scramble and find someone else to fill the spot. (Not to mention we realize how painful it is to get an email only for it to be the one you don't want and then being forced to decline.)

So, it's basic! Just comment here with your name (whatever it is listed as being on the Contact List for our easier comparison) and which pool you would want to be placed into, and we'll keep the master list of it here to refer to when randomization time comes around. We would also like to know who your preferred character for it is, just to have an idea and make things simpler. We understand that you might end up changing your mind and it's fine for you to pick someone else when the time comes!

If you are unsure about which one you want at the moment, or don't really have a preference, let us know that you would like to be in either pool. And if you ever change your mind about what you want, you can always comment again and have us edit it! The "pending" section is for characters who have been accepted in the last six months and are therefore too new to qualify. They will automatically be moved once they've been in the game for longer than six months.

Those who have already gotten SC or M-U don't need to reply! We'll restart the list once we cycle through everyone. (Unfortunately, since we get so many new players each application cycle, the chances of getting to start over are pretty unlikely.)

If you have valid concerns about any events/actions/players in the RP who have inarguably broken one or more of the rules, this is the post in which you should let us know. Any comments not made by personal/character journals of current players will be ignored and deleted.

Also keep in mind that before you use this post, you must talk problems out with other players and try to resolve issues yourself before you report them. (Of course, if you aren't part of a situation and you see something happen as an observer, let us know rather than trying to police things yourself.)

It's been asked. It's been questioned. It's been a confusing topic for mods and players alike, but finally, we have here the rules about just how languages work at Landel's.

BARE BASICS:

- Everyone can understand each others' main languages. A character whose main language is English would perceive someone whose main language is Japanese as speaking English, and vice versa.

- Second languages can only be understood by those who canonly understand that particular language.

- Characters perceive everything in the Institute as being written in their main language.

That's your refresher course, but for the full scoop, every player in the RP should read the behemoth underneath the below cut at least once for all the details.

This is for both mods and players to be able to keep track of who is on hiatus. This will stop mods from signing up people who are on hiatus for therapy/M-U/SC/etc. or mistaking someone for being inactive when they are simply away for a while.

The longest amount of time any player can take a hiatus for is three months. If something requires you to be gone for longer than that, you may have to drop your characters until you are able to play again and then reapply. There are certain exceptions, of course, so if you are in a situation where you would have to be gone for such a long period of time, please contact one of the mods to discuss the circumstances.

How it works: If you are going on hiatus, please comment here with your name, the characters you play, and how long you are going to be gone for/when you will be back. If you are only putting some of your characters on hiatus (for example, if your situation is that you're a little busy and don't have time to play with all of them), only list the characters you won't be actively using. Please also annouce your hiatus in damned_lounge, since not all players will be checking this list all the time.

Once the mods see your comment, they will edit this post with your information and then delete the comment (much like the way it works with the Contact List and Requested Characters List). When you return, we would appreciate it if you commented here to let us know, but we'll probably just see the announcement that you're back in damned_lounge and then remove your name from the list.

Nightshift-Only characters are characters who are applied for, added to the roster, and then randomly selected each nightshift to antagonize the patient characters. (More on how to apply for one here.) To give more details on how much power NS-Only characters have and what they can do ICly, here's a list of rules and guidelines similar to the SC rules but tailored to NS-Only characters in particular.

1) Your character is working on the Institute's side, and their main goal is to stop patients from proceeding any further through the Institute's grounds and to get patients to go back to their rooms. However, your character doesn't necessarily need to be fully aware of their orders; for example, if you had a character in mind who was a robot specifically programmed to work for a particular company, they might have been reprogrammed/brainwashed to think that the Head Doctor is the head of that company and nothing much has changed about their orders.

2) Your character has all their normal powers, clothes, weapons, defenses, etc., so long as they aren't to a godmodding extent. Your character should be powerful enough to take on several patients at once and have the upper hand, but they should have enough weaknesses that they could be feasibly knocked out or forced to retreat.

3) Your character has explicit orders to NOT kill any patients. They can badly injure them, immobilize them, or knock them out, etc., but killing is a big no-no. (The only exception to this is if you work something out with a player who's looking to get their character killed off.) However, as the Head Doctor is the kind of guy who wouldn't want the patients to know they weren't in complete mortal danger, your character is in no way obligated to tell the patients this, and is in fact encouraged not to.

4) If your character is knocked out, they're free to be looted by other patients. Although all of their clothing, special items, weapons, etc, are free to be used during that entire nightshift by whoever grabs them, (albeit with some limitations if the items are overly powerful), only ONE possession taken from your character will still exist in the morning. (So, for example, your character has a gun, a bullet-proof vest, and a helmet. Although three different people take those three objects once your character is knocked out, only one of those people will still have the item they looted once the morning comes.) What gets kept and who gets to keep it can either be worked out amongst the players, or, if people decide to compete for one or more objects, we mods can be called in to randomize who gets what. ;)

As far as how attacking other characters works: Basically, you choose a location on one of the maps (a room, a hall, or an area outside), and run it by us mods to make sure no one else has claimed it or that it doesn't pose any logistical problems. Once you do that, you wait for an unsuspecting character or group of characters to enter your assigned area, and when the time seems ripe... BOOM! You attack! Still, some guidelines you should follow are...

1) All the fighting against your character should occur within one thread. Yes, we know that this makes posting harder than if one antagonist is going after smaller groups in different threads, but one person jumping from thread to thread is bound to cause some continuity errors or godmodding, regardless of how accidental those actions are. Also, this way, characters can skirt around the fighting if they want to or can jump in just as easily. The exception to this rule is if your character completes a fight with one group of patients (as in all their opponents have been knocked out or have run away), and decides to go on to a completely new bunch.

2) Your character may be powerful, but that doesn't mean they're invincible. By apping an antagonist, you are devoting the utmost responsibility to keeping up good communication with the other players in your thread so that there aren't any misunderstandings about attacks or how they damage characters. Also remember that it's just as easy for other players to slip into godmodding during a fight as it can be for an antagonist, so don't be hesitant to let us mods know if you think something is awry. It's happened before, and we're happy to help sort things out!

3) If no one enters your area after a couple of days or so, you're perfectly welcome to ask us to re-assign your character's area to somewhere that would be more active and fun.

4) Your character may not leave their assigned area without permission from us. We basically have the assigned-areas rule so that patients won't feel so ganged-up on as they would if we had NS-only characters running amok all over the place, but if you want your character to give chase and the players of the people you're chasing totally want you to do that too, you're perfectly welcome to so long as you run it by us and we give it the go-ahead.

M-U happens every other Nightshift, and five lucky players are selected at random from the Landamned roster to take part in it. (Once a player has taken part in it, they will be ineligible for selection (for SC, as well) until everyone else in the entire roster has also had a chance (unfortunately, since we get so many new players each application cycle, the chances of this are very unlikely); players may also be considered ineligible for selection on a particular Nightshift if they are on hiatus or inactive.) Once five players are selected, the head mods will decide which of that player's characters would work best with M-U that night (this actually isn't as big of a deal with M-U as it is with SC, and chances are that we'll let you choose which character you want to volunteer for it), and then notify the player of their good fortune and of the mods' decision.

But what is M-U? It's... well, it's this (XD):

1) For one night, your character is at the institute's mercy (more than usual, anyway), and they are taken up to the Disciplinary Therapy rooms on the second floor to be experimented on during nightshift. The sort of experimentation they go through is more or less up to you and the NPC mod who is in charge of your thread. More on that later.

2) It is assumed that your character was taken from their room after dinner, sedated, and then moved upstairs. Given that we now have a dinner shift and possible roommate onlookers, you should inform your roommate's player that your character got M-U so that you guys can keep things consistent. The first post of the M-U thread (which the NPC mod will make using the damned_doctors account) will be the generic evil doctor setting up the scene, and then you reply to that with your character waking up and reacting to the unfortunate situation they have found themselves in.

3) Your character would be completely unable to get away until the experimentation is over. They will be strapped down or restrained in some way, not to mention the door is locked tight and the room is soundproofed, which means none of their screaming would carry to any other patients who might be wandering around. While it is common for patients to go on rescue missions for characters who have been abducted, they are unable to break in and would have to wait until the door is unlocked. The doctors assumedly are able to disappear quite mysteriously, so the rescuers don't get a shot at the people behind their friend's torture.

4) In order to work out what will be done to your character, you'll need to contact the NPC mod in charge of your thread through AIM, email, etc., and talk through ideas. We'll do our best to assign you a NPC mod who is familiar with your character and the series your character is from, but sometimes that isn't possible if your fandom isn't very well-known. Once you and the NPC mod figure out an idea to your liking, either one of you must contact one of the main mods to get the idea cleared. Once that's done, the NPC mod will start the thread.

And that's about that! If you're hoping for your character to get seriously screwed with, M-U is for you.

Magus Park

A beautifully sculpted park, Magus has a picnic area with grills, a playground complete with swings, a slide, a sandbox and monkey bars, and a beautiful pond bordered by weeping willows and wooden benches. Truly a relaxing spot - and a favorite of young lovers.

Black Rock Inn

On the outskirts of town, the Black Rock is a modest brick building boasting various suites and single rooms for all needs. The grounds have a pool, a dining room and offer a continental breakfast every morning. The decor is plush and comfortable, with a crackling fireplace in the lobby and dark green chairs and couches for patrons to relax on and visit with one another. There's a full bar, as well as a tennis court, to accommodate everyone's needs.

The Pet Supply Place

Carrying all the food and supplies you need to care for anything from a fish to a horse, The Pet Supply Place caters to every animal need. With a veterinary clinic in the back and a grooming parlor out front, they have every base covered. Family run by the Prucells, who have owned and raised livestock for seven generations, The Pet Supply Place is a large building at the end of *** street, near the residential section. It's easily recognizable by the bright red roof and the corral off to one side, which is home to one aging brown mare - and sometimes the larger animals that are visiting the vet clinic.

Mountain Antiques

Promoting itself as an 'antiques warehouse', Mountain Antiques is a favorite shopping spot for practically everyone. Full of knickknacks and rare finds, the three room shop is packed to the gills with all manner of antiques. And if you see something you like, you'd better get it fast! Nothing stays there for long - save for the stuffed tiger that stands beside the counter. Legend has it, the stuffed creature has been in the owner's family for seven generations, a reminder of days long past. The owner herself is a large, buxom woman named Hattie Fellows who's always happy to haggle over her prices and always has a story to tell - usually about one of her ancestors.

Hal’s Used Cars

Come on down to Hal's for the deal of a lifetime! Everyone knows Hal, who's as trustworthy as a used car salesman can be. While his cars may not be all he promises and you can't get the latest models, they run and he's happy to offer discount coupons to the local auto repair shop. And with no other car dealerships and Hal's seven kids to feed, folks are happy to buy their cars from his lot - plus his open ended credit policy isn't anything to sneeze at, as his signs proudly proclaim. The cars themselves range from 20 year old trucks to sports cars only five years old. If you need a car, you can get it at Hal's.

The Twin Pine Restaurant

Owned and operated by the Peterson family, Twin Pines serves up the best down home, hearty American fare in four counties. Its famous country fried steak has been written up in several local and state newspapers, and each article has been lovingly laminated and taped to the inside of the store front window, right next to the large, blue “A” awarded to them by the County Health Department. Almost as famous as the steak are the two teenaged Peterson girls, who work as waitresses after school and on weekends. Both sisters are very popular with the boys in town…thought it’s rumored that seventeen year old Jackie may have gotten into a little bit of trouble after Homecoming.

Monkey Wrench Auto Repairs

No one remembers that the owner’s full name is Joseph A. Wilder. Everyone in town just calls him Joe. In his younger years, Joe had been a racecar mechanic, but an accidental explosion cost him an arm and his job. Seeking to prove that he could do better with one hand than other men could with two, Joe moved back to his hometown and opened Monkey Wrench…and he’s been there ever since. Joe can repair just about anything, from big tractors to the delicate engines of fancy European sports cars (though he is rarely given an opportunity to practice THAT skill).

The Bookworm

Tucked into a small niche, it's easy to overlook the town's bookstore. The selection is mostly used, divided up into all the various sections one would expect in a bookstore. Romance, fantasy, mystery, fiction, non-fiction, self-help, religion, etc. Oddly enough, there's no history section. Books are piled haphazardly on the shelves, and the shelves themselves are wedged so close together it's difficult to navigate. Most often the counter is manned by an elderly woman and her college-aged counterpart, both dressed in brilliant clashing colors and often gossiping about the goings on in the town.

Lil’ Tyke Toys

“Lil’ Tyke Toys” has been an institution in town for almost as long as anyone can remember—at least fifty years or so. It has changed ownership twice, but the quality of the products it sells has not changed. It stocks just about everything—from the garishly colored toys advertised on television to antique dolls that are meant to be displayed, not played with. Its most popular feature among its youngest customers, however, is the candy counter, which serves up delicious confections of all shapes and sizes to anyone with a few quarters to spare.

Tasty Burger

In the vein of McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's, Tasty Burger is about as average a fast food burger joint as you can imagine. With a menu offering burgers, chicken strips, fries, onion rings, sodas and shakes, it's often packed with teenagers and families with small children. Everything is plastic, and there's a ball pit for the small children behind the dining area.

Callahan's Grocer

The only place in town for fresh meats, fresh produce and anything else you need for your dinner table. The store itself has a cozy atmosphere, the produce bins full of ripe fruits and veggies and the aisles stocked stocked with the staples of family meals. Meat is chopped to order by the friendly butcher Ryan, and the town's well-known bachelor Aaron Callahan himself works the register and sweeps up the floor, quick with an off color joke or a hand-rolled smoke for the men, a compliment for the ladies, and penny candy for the kids.

Richard Smith, MD Offices

Above the grocery store, the doctor's office announces itself with a modest plaque. There's a buzzer to be let into the waiting room, and patients are allowed inside on appointment only.

Pearl’s Beauty Salon Hair and Nails

Located in the heart of town, Pearl’s Beauty Salon is very similar to its sister businesses all over the country. The storefront features the same pictures and the same slogans (“Haircuts—Men, Women, and Children!” “Mani and Pedi, Special Price! $18” “Acrylics, full set: $25”) that adorn the front windows of beauty parlors nationwide. Inside, Pearl Langley rules over her little kingdom with a carefully coiffured iron fist. A large, heavily made up woman in her late fifties, she is the queen bee of the town’s older women, spreading gossip and showing off photos Mrs. So-and-So’s most recent grandbaby.

Bath and Beauty Shop

The shop all the ladies - and some of them men! - always make time to stop by. The small, pink painted building almost always has its door open, the scents of fine soaps, lotions, and bath products beckoning shoppers inside. Run by the kind and elderly Miss Dwight, the shop boasts handmade soaps and lotions, all scented in dozens of different tantalizing aromas - most of them floral and fruit based. Though around holiday time, Miss Dwight breaks out the special scents. Her candy-cane bath drops are said to be the best to be found anywhere. And she's always quick with a free sample or special gift.

T&M Electronics

Located next to the Beauty Salon, the electronics store is the one stop shop for all electrical needs. Radios and televisions line the large display window, with signs offering to repair, buy and/or trade used electronics plastered everywhere. Inside one can find everything from portable CD players to stereo systems, all under the watchful eye of Tina Warren, who's handiwork with a screwdriver is renowned all over town. Frequently, signs for seasonal sales can also be seen.

Bill's Hardware

All hardware stores are essentially the same. Bill's Hardware is no exception. Aisles of tools, electrical and old fashioned, fill the small store that smells like wood and oil. Behind the counter, the owner - a large man named Perry, not Bill as the name would suggest - rules over his shop like a king. He claims to know everything about fixing up a home. He also boasts he carries everything you need to do it, and will often haggle over prices. The counter itself proclaims special deals - nails for 5 cents each, screws by the pound, things of that nature. Despite being the only hardware store in town, good deals are assured.

Megahit Movie Rentals

Easily found by its bright orange and purple sign, Megahit Movie Rentals offers the widest selection of movies and video games. The new releases section is usually rented out, however. Nearly everyone in town has an account with Megahits, and the new computer system keeps everyone's info available with the touch of a button.

Crossroader's Bar and Casino

Even the most wholesome of towns needs its seedy side. The Crossroader's Bar and Casino hearkens back to days of the old west, with dark windows, a wooden bar and the faint scent of sawdust - all to add that authentic feel. Behind the bar, where old man Mathers runs things, bottles and glasses line the wall in front of a dusty mirror. Round tables are clustered in a small group in the center of the floor with slot machines and two Blackjack tables lining the wall. Above the bar hangs a keno screen, and there are various signs warning against rowdy behavior or guns on the premises. Not that Mathers follows his own rules - it's a well known fact he keeps a rifle of his own beneath the bar.

Mystic Healing Spa and Acupuncture

For the new ager, MHPA offers aura cleansing massages, raiki healing, crystal therapy, acupuncture, aromatherapy, sound and color healing, flower healing, and polarity therapy. The waiting room is a soothing place, painted in mild yellows and blues and smelling of incense and herbal tea. Crystals hang in the windows, and a small fountain sits on the receptionists desk. The receptionists are a rotation of dreamy eyed young men and women, dressed in flowing outfits and promising to heal the most troubled of souls.

Hearth and Home Handcrafted Furniture

The Heath family is very proud of their handmade, custom furniture. The whole family is a part of the business, from cousins who chop the lumber right down to fifteen year old Hattie Heath who cleans up around the store and workshop. The floorroom is a spacious single room and boasts every article of furniture a country home could possibly need. From beds and tables to corner cabinets and entertainment systems, Hearth and Home has the homeowner covered.

Sheriff's Office

Warm and friendly, it's clear the sheriff's office sees very little action. The town sheriff is a thin, pleasant looking man with a thick beard and small glasses. The plaque on his desk names him as Sheriff Tam Scotch. The office itself has a homey feel - curtains made by local townswomen, a chipped tea kettle on a hot plate behind the sheriff's desk, a few needlepoint stitcheries on the walls... the Sheriff is a bachelor, and many a town woman would like to be Mrs. Scotch. But for some reason, Sheriff Tam has yet to even date, let alone marry....

Kitchin' Fixins'

A shop for all your culinary needs! Specializing in cookingware - both indoor and out - Kitchin Fixins supplies dishware, cooking ware, spices, herbs and anything you can think of that would be needed for a kitchen or barbecue. Rumor has it the rarely seen manager is a bit of an iron-fisted tyrant, as cashiers and stockers never seem to last more than a week or two.

Morris Park

This park has fallen into disrepair. Litter lines the walkways and the grass is uncut and growing wild. As are the bushes and weeds. Far too many trees seem to choke the park, and even though the pleasant tinkling of a stream can be heard, very few respectable folks venture into it. It's known as a haven for small time drug dealers and criminals - though the only drug anyone's ever been caught with is pot, and the only crime seems to be a break in or vandalism now and again.

PAGE STILL UNDER RECONSTRUCTION

We realize it's hard to gauge how long or in-depth your app should be without having access to anything that you can use for comparison. Therefore, here are five apps that were easily accepted by us Landamned mods.

Basically, the point we're trying to get across here is that when we say detailed, we mean detailed. The more information you give us about the character you want to take, the better we can see your interpretation of him/her and be assured that you'll do a good job. ♥

Note: If you see any questions missing in these examples that are present on our current application, it means that those questions were added to our template after the apps below were sent in.

Since the example applications can't all fit in one post, here are links to them. Let us know if any formatting is off!

Godot / Diego Armando
Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations | Genre: Law/Crime Procedural/Mystery | Medium: Video Game

Note how, in the personal history section, the applicant goes into detail about the events most important to the character's development while leaving out many of the events that are least relevant to him. Also, pay attention to the thoroughness of the personality section (but keep in mind that while a chronological description works for this particular character, given that he goes through such radical changes during his canon, you should generally explain the changes to a character's ideology in the personal history section rather than the personality section). Another thing to note is that, while the applicant thoroughly explains the character's superficial quirk (coffee consumption) throughout the application, she treats it as a reflection of the deeper aspects of his characterization rather than using it as a basis. Lastly, look at the scope/psychological effects sections towards the end and take note that the applicant has solid plans for him within the game and has specifically chosen to take him from a point in canon that she feels gives him maximum potential for character development.

Jack O'Neill
Stargate SG-1 | Genre: Science Fiction | Medium: Movie / Live-Action TV

The big thing that we'd like to draw attention to here is the clarity and relative conciseness of the personal history, especially for a series as long and complicated as this one; also note how it is worded and explained in such a way that it is easy for someone unfamiliar with the series to follow. Similarly, the personality section is thorough without being incredibly huge and there is a good amount of explanation in the scope/psychological effects sections.

Temperance Brennan
Bones | Genre: Crime Investigation Procedural | Medium: Live-Action TV

The specific aspect of this application that should be noted is the detail put into the non-magical skills section; if a character is an expert in a certain field or if they have extensive training in some kind of discipline, it should be explained to us in detail to show us that the applicant is fully aware of the extent of the character's knowledge. Again, note how the personal history for this character has been condensed down to a manageable size rather than each episode being described in extreme detail.

Willy Wonka
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory | Genre: Fantasy | Medium: Book

This is a wonderful application overall, mostly because the applicant takes a character who could be easily apped "for the lulz" and instead fully fleshes him out in a very thoughtful way. Also note the great handle that the applicant has on the character's voice in the third-person sample and how, even though there are a couple of sentences from an NPC's perspective, the sample is still very much dominated by the character's thoughts and actions.

Yamazaki Ayumu
Peacemaker Kurogane | Genre: Shounen / Action / Historical Fiction | Medium: Manga

28 October 2006 @ 06:20 am
This is a list of characters who have been requested by current players as characters they'd like to interact with but who aren't currently taken in our roster. (Keep in mind that apping one of these characters does not mean that you'll be more likely to be accepted than if you app someone who isn't on the list.) This is not where you ask to reserve characters.

If you are a current player and would like to make one or more requests, please comment on this entry with your requested character(s) and their corresponding fandom(s). Your comment will be deleted when your requests are formally added to the list.

Rules for Adding

1) Only current players may make requests.

2) Please be reasonable with how many people you request---requesting two or three characters every month is probably the limit, since we don't want this list to get too long, as that would dilute our general desperation to get these particular characters.

3) Also be reasonable with who you request. You may certainly request characters who are close to a character you already have, but please don't use this justification for requesting characters so minor or obscure that they wouldn't realistically stand on their own as an RPable character. Same goes for characters who wouldn't fit our "appropriate for setting" criteria, i.e. someone like Winnie the Pooh. If there is someone currently on this list who you don't think meets this criteria, please let us know; we might have missed it since we don't know all the fandoms.

4) Please comment with your personal journal or character journal for this RP so that we can make sure you're a current player. Any anonymous comments will be ignored and deleted.

Character Reference

Userinfo
Standard Form
Please fill out the following form and paste it into your character's profile.

Customization
So long as you stick to the general form, you may use whatever kind of customized table or layout that you prefer. You may also add links to additional reference pictures or pages; in fact, it's recommended.

External Sources
Informational Link
While we recommend that you copy-paste your application (feel free to condense it down to a manageable size) into a journal entry or satellite page to link as your character's informational page, you are also perfectly welcome to use the DamnedWiki, Fandom Wiki, or Wikipedia page.

"Real Life" Background
You may, at any time, come up with a background for your character's "real" life before they were "admitted" into Landel's (i.e. the life that the nurses are trying to convince them they have). Once you do, please submit it us through damned.mods@gmail.com and once we approve it, you may post it as an OOC entry to your character's journal.

You may apply to take a doctor, (that is, you will be a mod whose tasks only include playing a doctor during therapy sessions), if you have have had at least one character in play for a month or more. You may send in an application whenever the userinfo states that Doctor Applications are open.

Your doctor must come from a pre-existing series, and you should play him/her with as much attention to staying in-character as you would a normal patient character. In order to be eligible to take on the role of a doctor, your character must canonly have the title of "Doctor" or "Professor" as part of his/her name, and must have some kind of medical or scholarly background, though due to certain circumstances that Landel's provides, that background doesn't necessarily need to be realistically related to mental health.

If accepted, you'll be filled in on the roles of the doctors, (as well as their level of knowledge of the inner workings of Landel's), straight away, and we'll discuss with you how your doctor should generally treat patients within the scope of their own IC-ness. Due to limited doctor slots, a player may only have one doctor character.

Note: Due to the fact that doctors are now way more interactive and have so much more freedom to move around than they did before, this application has become a bit more detailed due to the fact that they've become more like regular patient-characters and we must change our inquiries to reflect that.

Have you played the game/watched the movie or anime/read the book or comic, etc. that your doctor hails from?: (Please don't give us a simple "yes" or "no" for this. Instead, tell us how much of your character's series you've been exposed to and/or give us an explanation of how familiar you are with your character's series.)

Please give us a detailed personal history of your doctor: (Where he/she was born, who he/she was raised by, achievements, goals, etc. Note: Please do not link us to an outside source such as Wikipedia for this; we want you to demonstrate your knowledge of your character through your own words. If you give us a link instead of a bio, we won't read it unless it's supplementary information. Also keep in mind, however, that we don't need a scene-by-scene summary of a series--more like a detailed overview of the important events in your character's life and how they shaped them into who they are today. If there's anything in your character's backstory that's canonly vague or not yet revealed, make as many educated guesses as you can and let us know that you're speculating on those particular aspects of your character's history.)

Please give us a detailed description of your doctor's personality:

Please give us a detailed physical description of your doctor:

What kinds of magical/special/crazy powers does your character have, if any?:

If present, how do you plan to tweak those powers to make him/her a more realistic addition to the Landel's daytime staff?: (Please be as detailed and reasonable as possible; we're very strict about godmodding!)

Although we already know your character is a professor/doctor, what, exactly, is their field of expertise?:

Does your character have any other non-magical skills or abilities that we should know about besides their field of expertise?:

What point in time are you taking your doctor from when he/she appears at Landel's?: (For example, first episode, end of series, pre-game, post-movie, etc.? You can choose whatever you like, but please be as specific and detailed as you can--if possible, right down to the moment.)

Why are you interested in playing this character as a doctor instead of a patient?:

How would you explain your doctor ending up as part of the Landel's staff?:

How would your doctor approach patients during therapy?:

Doctor Sample:

Replace this block of text with a sample doctor post for us in third person, past tense. Your sample should be 500 words or more.

---

Finally, please attach a picture of your character to your email so we can get an idea of who you're talking about. (An official, full-body photo/illustration would be best, but if such a picture doesn't exist, go for whatever best alternative you can find. If your character is minor or obscure to the point that you don't have any pictures at all, please say so here and make sure that your physical description is as fleshed-out as it can possibly be.)

NOTE: We are looking for quality in our writers. We reserve the right to reject your application if we feel you don't have a strong command of your doctor or of the English language. These applications will be held to high standards, so we expect for you to do your best to meet them.

Inactivity

Policies
Definition of "Activity"
Our formal definition of "activity" only includes posts made to damned. Any posts made to damned_bulletin do not count towards your activity, as we wish to put the game's emphasis on third person prose.

Two Week Rule
If you have not posted to damned for two weeks or if you show a definite and continuous trend of going inactive for over two weeks at a time, you will be considered currently or chronically inactive.

Activity Checks
As we cannot keep track of everyone's activity in the RP, we sometimes issue unannounced Activity Checks in damned_lounge in order to take stock of player activity. All players are required to respond with their character(s)' most recent post before the Activity Check was posted; if your character(s)' post is two weeks old or more (and unless someone else is responsible for the wait) you will be considered inactive.

If You're On Hiatus
If your characters are on hiatus when an Activity Check rolls around, you are exempt from having to respond. However, if you have been on hiatus for over three months without express approval from the mods, you will be considered inactive.

Penalties
E-Mail Warning
If we become aware of inactivity, we will send you a standard warning e-mail; at that point, you can tell us if you want to try to get back into the groove of the game or if you'd like to drop your character instead. This is, of course, entirely fine. We understand that sometimes this game is too much. If you do not reply to the e-mail within two weeks, all characters mentioned in it will be automatically dropped. (If you were out of town or lacked computer access during this time, we will reinstate your claim.) Also note that, in the case of long-term, chronic inactivity, we reserve the right to give multiple strikes in one e-mail.

Three Strikes Rule
If we have to email you about a particular character's inactivity three times, the third e-mail will not be a warning and instead be a notification that you've now lost your claim to that particular character. If we have to e-mail you about all of your characters' inactivity three times, you will be ejected from the game as a player. For more information on ejections, please refer to Reports/Concerns.

Get your character in the game.
Make your introduction post.
Once your character is accepted into the communities, post to the newest damned_intercom post in damned with an intro post of your character waking up in their room. You may write interaction between your character and a nurse (and/or soldier) unless your character gets violent; then, you must contact an NPC mod to thread with you. If they're waking up at night, then your character is free to come to in a random unoccupied room. Just remember to remind one of the mods to add your character tag for you!

Start playing!
You are now free to post your character to the current shift's post and have them interact with whoever you like. We hope you have fun with us! ♥

NOTE: Currently there is a special military arc that is going on in-game. The basic rundown of it is explained here, but you can look at the general "*military arc" tag on the Lounge for more information.

Introduce yourself as a player.
Post an entry in the OOC community.
This is an optional step, but if you want to start getting to know the other players in the game (or just let everyone know that you officially got in), go ahead and post an entry in damned_lounge introducing yourself and your character. NOTE: We used to have one big entry posted by us where people could do introductions, but we've decided to make it something done individually since our app volume has decreased recently.

Default Supplies

Summary
Further clarification/explanation to be added.

Equipment
Journal
Found on top of your character's desk.

Flashlight
To be added. Ultra-durable flashlight, also good as a makeshift weapon. Found under your character's pillow.

Radio
To be added. Small rechargeable radio that plays music during the day and from time to time at night spits out hints or locations of valuable resources. Found on top of your character's desk, next to their journal.

Batteries
To be added. Two sets of batteries. (Each set keeps the flashlight alive for four nights of continuous use.) Found in your character's desk drawer.

Key Ring
A plain metal key ring. Right now, it only has two keys on it: one that unlocks and locks your character's room from the outside and one that unlocks and locks your character's desk drawer. Found in your character's desk drawer. (Note: Your characters room may only be locked and unlocked from the outside; there is no keyhole on the inside. During Dayshift, your character's door is locked from the inside without exception and during the Nightshift, your character's door is unlocked from the inside without exception.)

Pens
To be added. A roll of thirty disposable pens in a rubber band. Found in your character's desk drawer.

Clothing
T-Shirts
Ten grey shirts, all with a large, classic yellow "smiley face" printed on the front. Players of female characters may choose for them to get female-style t-shirts (or a mix of both). Made of 100% cotton and pre-shrunk. Found on plastic hangers in your character's closet.

Sweatpants
Seven pairs of plain grey sweatpants. Made of 100% cotton and pre-shrunk; each has an elastic waistband and a white drawstring, along with two pockets. No elastic around the ankles. Found folded neatly in your character's bottom dresser drawer.

Undergarments
Male characters will find seven pairs of plain white briefs, three pairs of smiley face patterned boxer shorts, and eight plain white sleeveless undershirts. Female characters will find ten pairs of plain white panties (no lace), six pairs of plain white padded bras (wired, but no lace), and two pairs of plain white sports bras. All are folded neatly in your character's top dresser drawer. Nurses will under no circumstances allow your character to wear any undergarments without proper attire on top.

Sweatshirts
Two pairs of grey sweatshirts, both with the smiley face logo on the front; no hoods or pockets. Made of 100% cotton and pre-shrunk. Found on plastic hangers in your character's closet.

Coat
One plain brown, thickly insulated winter coat with water resistant coating; has two hand-warming pockets at the sides, two lines of buttons down the middle, and a tie for the waist; goes down to the knees. Nurses will only allow your character to wear this during shifts in which they will be encountering very cold weather during outdoor activities (Recreational Field/Greenhouse/Courtyard/Doyleton).

Slippers
Two pairs of plain white indoor slippers; low-heeled with a warm, fuzzy interior and soft rubber soles. Found on the floor of your character's closet.

Shoes
One pair of plain white, laced, rubber-soled sneakers. Found on the floor of your character's closet. Nurses will only allow your character to wear these on days when they will be participating in outdoor activities (Recreational Field/Greenhouse/Courtyard/Doyleton). Found on the floor of your character's closet.

Boots
One pair of plain brown winter boots with water resistant coating and rubber soles; no fastenings. Well-insulated and durable, but without any heft that would make them dangerous. Nurses will only allow your character to wear these on days when they will be encountering cold, wet weather during outdoor activities (Recreational Field/Greenhouse/Courtyard/Doyleton). Found on the floor of your character's closet.

01 October 2006 @ 12:33 am
While the doors are all locked during the day, everything (almost everything, anyway) unlocks at night. While the day is structured, night is chaos. Roam the halls, trash an office, loot another patient’s room—all of it is at your command. Depending on your character, they could team up, go it alone, use and abuse others, latch onto stronger people, and so on.

As you’ve probably figured out by now, everything is much more sinister during nightshift. The nurses and animals morph into monsters that will be after you, mainly during comments from damned_monsters or damned_nurses invading your post without warning. (You can also request for a monster or nurse to attack your character if your thread is getting boring.) You will have the radio helping you out from time to time, though—if your character decides to carry it around with them, anyway!

The intercom is still around during nightshift. The Head Doctor is decidedly worse at night, in fact. The posts will show up randomly for taunting the patients, rearranging the building, and so on. There could be a public post in the main community that will apply to all patients, or it can post in a comment to mess with a certain person/group.

The duration of nightshift is three weeks.

Powers

General
Explanation
One of the biggest objectives of this RP is to put characters in a position where they feel both physically and emotionally vulnerable; this is to give players an opportunity to develop their characters in a way that might not be feasible in their original canon. One of the easiest and most significant ways to do this is to weaken or completely erase abilities that they usually take for granted.

What constitutes a "power"?
A power is any ability that your character has in their canon that would be physically impossible in our real life world. Along with obvious cases like magic, telepathy, and transformation, this also includes inhuman feats that might be considered merely noteworthy within the context of your character's canon but which would not occur in our world. (For example: a samurai moving lightning-fast in an anime that is otherwise historically-based.)

How about high intelligence?
No matter how ridiculously smart, intuitive, or observant your character may be, this does not count as a power and does not need to be weakened. However, while in play, you must make sure that your character does not godmod by jumping to conclusions without writing out their reasoning; in addition, you must consult with the mods before your character deduces anything substantial about the Damned plot at large and consult with players before your character deduces anything about another character that might significantly impact their development.

How about natural combat ability?
Any feats that are plausible in our world are exempt from weakening; however, if your character is generally able to take down dozens upon dozens of foes without breaking a sweat, climb buildings daily, run miles and miles, etc., in their canon, it should be stated clearly in your application and is subject to mod approval.

What weakens the characters?
Your character's abilities are automatically modified when they wake up in Landel's. How this is possible is a mystery that your character must solve.

Can I take my character's powers away completely?
You can nerf your character's powers as much as you want if you feel that it would facilitate more interesting development than a normal range of in-game abilities.

Can I change my character's powers in-game?
If you have a solid rationalization behind it and if the request is reasonable, then yes. However, this is an uncommon event and should only take place if you run into serious problems with your character's development or if your character undergoes an M-U session.

Can you change my character's powers in-game?
The mods reserve the right to radically alter your character's power set should it become necessary to do so. However, this is an extremely rare event; usually, mod intervention involves general clarification rather than severe penalization.

Overall Standards
Game-Wide Balance
While it is impossible to standardize all powers under a common set of rules, we try to be as fair as possible in keeping the powers of all characters consistent across the board regardless of how comparatively powerful they are in their own canons. For example, a megalomaniacal supervillain with Earth-crushing power would be given no more preference than an underdog superhero.

Canon Power Sets
If your character belongs to canon in which a variety of different individuals have the same general set of powers (e.g. Harry Potter wizards, Bleach shinigami, Twilight vampires, etc.), we do our best to keep that set of powers consistent for each in-game member of that canon. In some cases, with the express permission of their canonmates, some players may request that their character be slightly more powerful than their canon peers if the better power set still fits our overall criteria of limitations.

If you are apping into a canon with a preexisting set of players, we strongly advise that you contact your potential canonmates for information before writing the power limiting section of your application.

Overpowered Characters
As there are many different types of powers spanning many different canons, you can imagine how limiting might be a tricky process with some very gray areas and many opportunities for misunderstanding. As such, a character may turn out more overpowered in practice than they should be in theory; if you witness this in-game, please report it to us immediately.

Specific Application Criteria
PLEASE READ THE BELOW SECTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE BEGINNING THE POWERS SECTION OF YOUR APPLICATION. Failing to meet any of the below criteria may greatly increase the time needed to process your application.

Be specific
If your character is keeping an ability, you must tell us exactly what it can do in its limited state. The more details, the better: tell us HOW MUCH DAMAGE it can do or HOW MUCH PROTECTION/HEALING it can provide, HOW LARGE AN AREA it can affect, HOW LONG it lasts, HOW MUCH FATIGUE it would cause, and HOW MANY TIMES per night it can be executed.

Provide reasonable limitations
The best way to deal with a power is to set a specific amount of times it can be used each night, with each time increasing your character's fatigue. However, these limitations also depend on: a) how powerful the ability is, b) how useful the ability is, c) how easy to it is execute the ability, and d) other related variables. While we can't provide every permutation of possible circumstances, we can tell you that more powerful/useful abilities will cause more negative side-effects and be limited to less uses, whereas extremely mild or benign powers might be allowed more uses without any side-effects at all.

Give concrete time frames
If you have to set a time limit on a particular power (for example: a summoned weapon, a force field, a berserker rage, etc.), you must give us a time limit in seconds, minutes, or number of posts. Again, the more potent a power, the more it will be affected: a summoned weapon might last for ten minutes, a weak force field might last for 60 seconds, and a berserker rage might last for two posts.

List all individual abilities
If you have a character who can perform a wide range of feats (e.g. telepathy, empathy, telekinesis, premonitions, fire sorcery, water sorcery, flying, etc.), you may only choose four (preferably fewer) abilities for them to keep in-game. Once you have chosen these abilities, you must list each one in your application and specify how exactly each remaining ability would be limited. You may also keep a bank of moves for your character that they can choose from (for example, your character has access to four abilities but can only perform two per night), but again, the limitations must be concrete. Keep in mind that the larger variety of abilities that your character keeps, the less they will be able to use them and the more they will be weakened.

Be conscientious of latent abilities
Latent abilities are powers that your character constantly experiences or has access to (e.g. having super-speed/strength, being able to see ghosts, being able to sense emotions, being able to regenerate, etc.). In these cases, you may either treat the latent ability as a normal power and apply all of the above limitations to it, or you may have your character keep it constantly but with constant side-effects and/or heavy weakening. Like normal powers, how much a latent power is limited depends on its potency: seeing ghosts might not need to be weakened at all so long as the general kinds of sightings are cleared by the mods, but super strength/speed will usually be limited to plausible athletic standards. Again, if your character's latent power is their only remaining power, it will not be as limited as it would be otherwise.

On telepathy/empathy/sensory abilities
These latent abilities are possibly the most tricky category due to the myriad ways in which they can potentially affect another player's character. As such, overall telepathy/empathy are generally nerfed quite harshly, with physical contact or general closeness determining how much information one character can glean off of the other. More specific sensory abilities may not be as severely affected and can be allowed a post on damned_lounge to collect information from other players if that character will be sensing something from large groups of people. In all of these cases, the player of the affected character must be consulted for permission.

If any of the above information didn't answer any questions you might have, please don't hesitate to contact one of the mods for further information. We realize this is all pretty complicated and we're always happy to help!
