Winter Actually Arrives

There is snow on the ground! It finally happened! I’m sure that you all think I’m insane, but I LIKE the first month of snow. In Michigan, we’ve largely had a lame, brown, rainy winter. The most depressing kind of winter that I can imagine. So, when Mr. C&M called to ask how the roads were on my way home from work on Friday after the storm had started, I enthusiastically responded, “They’re shit! It’s like being up north! I love it!”

For some clarification, I was raised in the snow belt region of Michigan. We were covered in heaps of snow, all winter long. Snowflakes so large, it was like lake effect snow but far from the great lakes. Snowbanks were taller than vehicles. You hauled sand around in your vehicle for the added weight for traction but also in the even that you got stuck in the snow, to help get you out. If you were smart, you had an emergency kit and sleeping bag in there too.

That being said, southern Michigan is a completely different story. People down here get stressed out and act like its end times over 3-4 inches. I can’t even pretend to be upset about that. Which genuinely shocks some customers. They’re ready to hunker down like it’s the snowpocalypse.

The temperature this morning was 1 degree. THAT I can do without. I just want snow not the bitter cold. The poor dogs can barely pee without their little paws freezing. I was forced to leave the warmth of my house for shampoo and conditioner today. We were completely out, like couldn’t milk anymore out of the bottle. I don’t recommend going outside. Just stay in the nice warmth, bundled in blankets and enjoy how pretty the snow is from the safety of your home.

We’re having grilled cheese and soup for lunch, followed by hot cocoa this evening. All the cold weather treats.

This past week was rather uneventful otherwise. The only thing of note was that I learned that there is a National Houseplant Appreciation Day! (There is a day for practically everything.) For people who are not fans of the snow, I will leave you off with some pretty green pictures to help you dream of spring. ❤

Coffee & a Chat – Snowpocalypse 2022

It wasn’t quite the snowpocalypse that everyone was making it out to be. At least for us but, it is the most snow we’ve seen in a long time in our area. We got about 8″-10″, probably closer to 10. (I’m bad at estimating and I never watch the local news.) There was plenty of shoveling but we didn’t have to actually leave our property for two days, which was awesome. We watched the snow fall, made chili, played video games and snuggled up with the fur babies in blankets.

Luckily, we never lost power. I prepped like a crazy woman in case we did but we didn’t. Years of growing up in Northern Michigan makes prepping feel like an essential. During Y2K, (I was 13) my dad wasn’t worried about it, but he let me prep to feel better. I filled our root cellar with water, canned food, dog food and make sure the dog was inside when midnight hit. Obviously, nothing happened but I felt better being ready for it.

Apparently, 22 years later, that still makes me feel better.

Instead of getting in a TON of reading, I became absorbed in Pokemon Shield. I am having a great time and my Dreadnaw can kick almost anyone’s ass.

This isn’t actually my character but they look alike.

When I do get a little reading in, I am still working on Goblet of Fire. It’s slow going but I am enjoying it when I do read.

The snowstorm and subsequent roads have made it a quiet return to work, which is a nice change of pace. I still don’t like being a pharmacy tech anymore.

School on the flipside, has been very enjoyable for a change. I’m doing great in Strategic Business Management (easy when you’ve helped run a small business for 10 years) and I have been working hard in Intro to Probability and Statistics. Despite being a math class, I am having fun learning it.

Coffee & a Chat – Prepping for Chaos

You have been welcomed with a BLEP.

My dad came to visit for a few days. He was going to watch the dogs while we were in California after all, so why not get away from home for a bit since he already had the time off? We worked on a small bathroom project (NO MELANIE IT’S STILL NOT DONE), and then mostly we hung out and watched movies and some TV. Where my dad lives, he doesn’t get cable or internet so he’s been through his movie collection multiple times. It’s funny watching someone’s mind being blown by all the options presented by streaming.

This has mostly been a lazy vacation. Lots of rest and relaxation. A bit of gutting and organizing parts of the house. Plenty of time to get schoolwork done before its due. It’s been great.

AND NOW

They are calling for 12-18 inches of snow to hit us.

To be honest, I am totally okay with this. I welcome the snow chaos. As long as I don’t lose power.

So that means, we’re spending today prepping for the incoming storm. Unfun activities like grocery shopping and hitting the pet store for food for the animals as well. Gotta bust out all the winter gear because there is going to be a lot of shoveling in our future.

It’s funny because a few months ago Mr. C&M and I agreed that we would like to be snowed in for a week. We’re not getting a full week but I will take the couple of days before returning to work.

Hot cocoa, coffee, soup, books, puzzles, video games, locked and loaded.

Snow Hounds

It’s been quite some time since the dogs had their very own post here on the blog and with the recent snow fall, they’ve been especially cute playing in the fluffy whiteness. So just sit back and enjoy a small photo gallery of my funny little snow hounds. ❤

I loving refer to Ozzy as the Snow King in the winter as he LUUUUUURRVVVEESSS the snow. Samus loves it for a minute, bounds through it like a deer and then is promptly ready to go back inside to the warmth. Ozzy must be convinced to come back in.

Winter of Epic Rain and Ice

Well….poop shite. My winter of epic fantasy is turning out not so epic-y. Michigan is in total non-cooperation mode and determined to only dump rain and ice on us. Unless you live anywhere from northern-lower Michigan on up to the Upper Peninsula, then you’re probably telling me to stop my fucking whining, the alternative is that I could be buried in snow.

But I prefer that! I can handle ALL the snow. I’m just over the rain and bitter fucking cold. It’s making me a bitter fucking person, because all I want is some mood setting for reading. I literally save up my epic fantasy books for this time of year and without said snow, I’m not really motivated to read them. Sure, I finished the Mistborn trilogy. When we had some resemblance of snow. Now I’m in a constant fucking battle with myself trying to figure out what genre I feel like reading, all while trying to pressure myself to read epic fantasy. This shitty weather just makes me want to read Urban Fantasy for some reason and I’m about to give in.

I mean, I picked up The Shotgun Arcana, but I’m having trouble focusing on it. I blame the lack of snow.

So I guess I’ll go outside today, on a date lunch with the husband and flip both middle fingers to the sky because maybe telling Mother Nature to go fuck herself will get me what I want.

Winter of Epic Fantasy

Every winter becomes my “Winter of Epic Fantasy” as soon as the snow hits. I don’t really know why but the snow seems to set an even better mood for epic fantasy. Or maybe it’s just because I don’t want to go outside for as many hours as possible. Add being cuddled on the couch under mounds of blankets and my critters all around me and really why would I want to move?

The snow is holding out on me this year. We’ve had one dusting and it all melted by morning. But that doesn’t hold this girl back! I started anyway. I finally picked up the second book in the original Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. It’s been almost two years since I read the first book and absolutely loved it. Why did it take me so long to pick up the second?

I have this wonderful habit of starting a series and then starting another series and then starting another series. So my only reading goal for 2017 is finishing up some of those series and I’m getting a jump start on it.

So, since most of my favorite epic fantasy tales are 800+ pages long, I would be going pretty long in between posting book reviews. Luckily, I have two years worth of reviews that I’ve already done on Goodreads so I will share those while reading my epic monsters.

I encourage you, my dear book dragons, to spend the winter indulging in some epic fantasy as well. (It is after all, the best genre.)
