On Moving Apartments [Jun. 3rd, 2011|01:30 pm]

There are of course a lot of new things you discover when you move to a new place. We didn't move too far from our old place so there were some things I knew already. One of the things really like about Taaffe Place is that we're across from a park. It's a much more quiet street for people watching than Myrtle Ave, but when there are people at the park it's much more interesting than people getting off the subway train. There are soccer games on weekend evenings, the school 2 doors down has P.E. and field days over there, it's pretty entertaining.

Oh man [Nov. 17th, 2009|02:00 am]

sometimes when i try to hit the "end" or "home" buttons on my laptop (a key combo) it gets confused and thinks I hit the key combination for "back". This almost always happens when I'm writing a livejournal entry or doing some sort of form. when I hit "forward" I've lost whatever I've just written or filled out. That just happened, and I'm pretty PO'd about it. Argh!

short version - too busy doing fun & not fun stuff to write lately but was inspired by Suzanne Fiol's memorial yesterday. Interning at ISSUE Project Room was way awesome and hard at times, and it was definitely a learning experience.

Other random thoughts - I like Glee & the Thursday night NBC TV shows. And the discussion that is going on around the New Museum for Contemporary Art showing the collection of one of their trustees, as curated by a superstar artist. I like learning new random things through people i follow on Twitter. In that vein, it's fun to follow some comedians and various famous people, but not all. Did you know that "Kelly" on the office is one of the main writer & producers? she also tweets.

Art in General is getting a lot of press lately, hooray! I'm getting concrete results for my efforts! It doesn't hurt that the exhibition is pretty fun (and fantastical).
I'm meeting lots of interesting people, some of whom are going to be in the art history books, as either artists or writers. I guess time will tell who. I want to have coffee with all of them but there are only so many hours in a day.

Old friend Melissa is coming from Texas for Thanksgiving, yay! Other Brooklyn friends are too, and that's also exciting, but Melissa is a good friend from a long time ago and we grew apart for a while but i think things are going well and we're getting closer again.

Sad [Oct. 6th, 2009|12:37 am]

I just found out that a woman I interned for (Suzanne Fiol, founder of Issue Project Room) died this morning. Sad sad. A friend I made through that internship told me a few weeks ago that she was doing poorly with some kind of cancer so I made a poor attempt at getting in touch with Suzanne by writing a quick, sweet email. That she probably never got because she was in the hospital.  I hadn't visited Issue to see her lately because I thought I still could in the future. Now I can't.

When it rocks it rocks [Aug. 13th, 2009|01:51 am]

I can't fall asleep because my mind is going too fast, but I can't read (and actually retain anything) because I'm too sleepy. I just started reading The Collected Stories of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and I love his style but it's so full of metaphor that it ends up reminding me of something else, and I drift off thinking of whatever that was...

Anyway, one of the things I was thinking about that was keeping me up was a sense of satisfaction with my job. We had an epic but great staff meeting today, the first time we had all sat down together in the same room for at least a month. It was the last staff meeting for one colleague, and the first for the woman taking over the job. We talked about the great programs coming up and cool ideas for artist services and promotion. We talked about a recent audience survey and what some of our audience had to say about us. We talked about getting a new look for the website and how it can best reflect our programs and our new commitment to online engagement, and opening up the process of artmaking.

As I read the book earlier by an author I love I looked with new eyes at the book itself, hardbound in blue canvas with a creamy rough stock and little decorative details on the title page of each story. I notice this because I get to help artists make books about their work and I'm learning more and more about how books are made. One artist I'm working with now has been making drawings that weren't a part of the exhibition (The Timber). But they are inextricably linked to the video performance works, and I saw more of them on her blog tonight. She is an artist and a scientist, though not "officially" a scientist, and her approach to life and art reminds me to be more curious and try to learn about more stuff.

walking the dog the other day [Jun. 19th, 2009|11:57 am]

I was walking the dog the other day (at least 2 days ago, as it's been raining again...) I walked by a mom and a son and a daughter. The younger daughter said matter-of-factly as I walked by, "doggie." and her brother corrected her, knowingly, "Chihuaha."

Tweet transferral suspended [Jun. 14th, 2009|09:48 am]

So, once upon a time I posted to LJ lots and lots. I had a boring job and a semi boring life, thanks to friends who kept up with me back them! Then I didn't post so much, as my life got more busy. I had more to post about but less time to do it.
Later I discovered Twitter and how I could update from my phone, which was cool because so often I'd be out and about and think of something I wanted to write about but almost never come home and write about it.  So I thought it might be neat to send my tweets to LJ so my friends could keep up with my little random thoughts without having to join twitter if they didn't want to.  I didn't realize how annoying it was, the device i was using made the tweets seem very scientific, with times, and # symbols, and it included tweets it wasn't supposed to include (on twitter when you start an update with @username it's a reply, but it's mostly just for those people and folks on twitter who follow us both).  Anyway, so I have now turned that off, and I'm going to try and actually post to LJ more often, perhaps using my twitter as inspiration, but not as the only vehicle for keeping in touch with you guys. My twitter also gets sent to my facebook, and I have a lot of friends there through church and work, etc, so I don't often share as much as I might here on LJ, where I know and trust my friends and don't have to try and act quite as professional.
I do miss writing real entries, I used to do it on Fuuse and here and now I don't do either one.

So here's to starting again!
