CSET (Cyber Security Evaluation Tool) is a free cybersecurity assessment solution developed by Idaho National Laboratory with support from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). It helps organizations evaluate the security posture of information technology (IT) and operational technology/industrial control system (OT/ICS) environments. CSET guides users through structured questionnaires and optional network diagramming to benchmark practices against recognized standards and frameworks, such as NIST SP 800-53 and 800-82, ISO/IEC 27001, NERC CIP, and ISA/IEC 62443. The tool generates gap analyses, maturity scores, and prioritized action plans, enabling teams to identify vulnerabilities, document compliance efforts, and track remediation over time. Widely used across critical infrastructure sectors, CSET can be tailored to an organization’s size, industry, and regulatory context, with exportable reports that support audits, planning, and continuous improvement.
