Our two-year Master of Science program uses a student-focused curriculum to fit individual interests.

The MS Mathematics program offers a dynamic and customizable path through graduate study, designed to support a wide range of academic and professional goals. Students engage with diverse areas of mathematics while developing the skills needed for careers in industry, education, and beyond. An optional area of emphasis allows students to further shape their academic experience.

Plan types

Get your Master’s degree one of three ways.

Plan A Master’s

Complete a defined sequence of courses and a thesis on a topic decided by you and your thesis advisor.

Credit requirements

20 credits of coursework + 10 thesis credits

Plan B Master’s

A flexible program that allows you to explore your interests in Mathematics and complete a comprehensive final oral exam instead of a thesis.

30 credits of coursework

Plan C Master’s

Strongly emphasizes the core courses.

MS Mathematics: Data Science

Expands students' expertise to leverage mathematical thinking and data-driven approaches to solve real-world problems.
Supports development of technical skills in the theory and practice of data science algorithms, analysis of data, statistical modeling and applied mathematics.
Python programming skills empower students to apply machine learning and modeling approaches to practical datasets.

Plan type: C only

MS Mathematics: Industrial and Applied Mathematics

Focused on practical experience.
Rigorous coursework prepares students for the math encountered in industry.
Participation in the Industrial Problems Seminar opens up opportunities for internships in industrial laboratories.

Plan type: A, B, or C

MS Mathematics: Math Education

Prepares students to become effective mathematics educators.
Students complete the coursework to earn their initial or secondary teaching licensure in addition earning a MS in Mathematics.
Five semesters long, including one summer session.

Plan type: B only

Graduate Mathematics minor

Requires 2 courses that total at least 6 credits.
