Sub-Saharan Africa is the 3rd fastest-growing crypto region, per the 2025 report by Chainalysis.
From Jul 2024 to Jun 2025, it saw $205B in on-chain value, up 52% YoY. Nigeria led with $92.1B, nearly three times South Africa’s. South Africa ranked second, helped by its clearer regulatory framework, while Ethiopia, Kenya, and Ghana rounded out the top five.
In 2024, South Africa took a major step by approving 248 Crypto Asset Service Provider (CASP) licences (as at December 2024). By December 2025, the FSCA had approved 300 CASPs out of 512 applications received (with 14 declined and 291 still active on the latest published list).
The Travel Rule for crypto asset transfers was implemented in South Africa via Financial Intelligence Centre Directive 9, effective 30 April 2025, aligning the country with international AML/CFT standards to combat financial crime.
