Paper Magic

(Part Two)

The next night of the new moon, Kit sat in darkness atop a stone edifice, shintai near the shrine at the crossroads. He waited for the road god, Chimata-no-kami to appear. It was he who planted the shintai centuries before to protect travelers from epidemics and evil spirits. From his perch, Kit searched from one crisscross in the road to the other, knowing the beast from Momoko’s terrible tale should travel through this forest and approach at the demon’s hour. Kit had less than one hour to wait.

The pungent scent of pine burned his nose. He woke to whispered words and found the wizened face of Chimata-no-kami bending close to his ear. Kit looked up to find a will-o-the wisp disappear between the dense foliage beyond. He slid from the shintai and hurried toward the light. As he did, he slipped his hand into his pocket and pulled out a thin square of rice paper that fit in the palm of his hand. He tore a fingertip size hole in the paper and dropped the torn piece to the ground. He then tucked the remaining paper piece safely inside his empty pocket.

As he followed, the light slowly disappeared until darkness surrounded him, like a living thing with tentacles ready to suffocate and strangle him. It was then he heard them creeping through the thick underbrush, coming from all sides.

He breathed in horror, “Kumo!”

Kit slipped his hand into his pants pocket and felt for the remaining rice paper sheets. He pull one free and folded the crisp sheet into the shape of a wasp. Then he set the creation in a clump of leaves near his feet. He drew out a second square and smoothed the creases into a lantern that he held and blew. He whispered, “Ju-Fu!” His breath entered through the base of the lantern, turning scarlet as it filled the insides. One last puff sent the lantern afloat just above his fingertips.

At his feet, the buzzing wasp came to life. He knew by the pulse of her heart beat when she lifted from the ground and flew toward the tree limbs above. The place where others of her kind hid. Within moments, the air-filled with more buzzing wasps as they headed in the four sacred directions: North, South, East and West. Kit knew that each female would first strike the half human, half spider Kumos sending poison through their veins that would paralyze them. The wasps would ding holes to bury each dupe and then lay their eggs on top so that the newly hatched larva could feed on their immobilized victims.

Kit cringed at the thought of such suffering. But if the Kumo had reached him first, their venom would have melted his insides to syrup that they would hungrily slurp down their gullet.

Drawing in a deep breath, he took out the folded square of paper with the torn hole in its middle. He held the open knot to his eye and saw the place where the torn out piece still lay. Then he shifted and ran on four paws toward the crossroad. When he stopped, he stood beside the shintai  once again. He frowned knowing Momoko’s monster must have sensed his presence and that was why it sent the Kumo. Kit’s next approach would need greater stealth in order to destroy it.

Ju-Fu

Paper Magic

 (Part One)

Wind chimes rattled. Fireflies twinkled and danced. Mesmerized, Kit stood at the entrance to the tea house, gripping the door in a half-open, half closed stance. Night and a warm breeze at his back, the cool whir of a ceiling fan made the electric lights seem to flicker while the spicy scent of cinnamon blew into his face. He stared across the room, his mouth agape, where she sat in a booth near an open window.

White curtains of hair hid her face. A sprig of yellow flowers and purple berries clasped the center of the drapery facing Kit. When she turned, one curtain of hair fell across her shoulder. Her eyes flashed ruby-red before they turned chocolate-brown. A corner of her pink lips lifted in a teasing smile. He released the door and made his way toward her. The cinnamon scent grew stronger as he approached and sat down.

She pulled the sprig of flowers and berries lose, placing it on the table in front of him. “I know who you are, Kit Sanjin and I have need of your special skills.” She purred.

A sly smile spread slowly across Kit’s face. He looked down at the charm and with a single motion, swept the sprig to the floor. It floated to the wooden planks where fruit and flowers wilted to brown.

At the indiscretion, her eyes flashed blood-red. For a moment, the vixen’s face showed itself. The fluff of tail danced in the shadow of the lantern’s light.

Kit’s smile broadened. “And I know who you are, Momoko.” He dusted the palms of his hands together, releasing the pungent spice that remained embedded against his skin. “I will help you. Not because you weave a spell or try to seduce me with love charms, but because I believe in the same cause as you.”

The bright edges of her smile turned the angry frown upside down. This time, the visage of a fox crinkled and smirked. “This is why I chose…” She bit her lips together and lowered her eyes before releasing the next words. “This is why I humbly ask for your help. I am a simple fox with no talent for magic.”

Kit propped his elbows against the table top and leaned toward her, so their noses almost touched. “Tell me your plan.”

He drank hot green tea and slurped savory, fat udon wheat noodles as she told him a tale of unspeakable horror., her voice hushed and tragic as she spoke.

“For the last three months, at every new moon, a bright light has appeared in the forest. Terrified, we cringed in our burrows. The next morning, the newest litter of pups was found slaughtered in their nest, ripped from limb-to-limb. Their heads bitten off and missing. The mother fox lay nearby dazed and half-dead, covered in the blood of her children while blackened char covered the ground outside the den.

At first the blame went to the mother for the deaths of her children. But it soon became apparent that something evil and sinister stalked our clan.”

Kit nodded. “It is the same awful tale that I have heard over and over in hushed, disbelieving tones.”

Before he left the tea house that night, Kit slipped a square of rice paper from his jacket pocket and proceeded to fold intricate creases into the form a fox. When he sat the kitsune on the booth, two tiny eyes glowed ruby-red from the paper folds.

Fledgling

Fledgling (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I had a wonderful experience shared with two of my best friends. One day, Adam and I were eating lunch. I noticed a young mockingbird clinging to the windowsill outside. We sat inside at the kitchen nook. The fledgling must have been the last of its clutch. Its wings not yet strong enough to carry it to safety. I had seen the mother bird fly past a couple of times to bring it food.

Excited, I said, “Adam, look at the baby!”

Four-years-old, Adam got up from his junior table and hurried to the window. He stood close mesmerized by the little bird. The fledgling seemed unafraid of its human friends. Yet, only when we stepped away from the window did the mother mockingbird return with a juicy bug or worm to feed the fledgling. So, we took up our vigil a short distance away to help her feel comfortable enough to do this.

We worried over the little bird. Fearing that a cat or wild animal might get to it before its wings developed enough to take it to safety.

When I left for the day, the fledgling  still clung to the windowsill. I told Christie, Adam’s mother, about it. She then took up the vigil and continued to watch over the fledgling even when it moved to the safety of a folded lawn chair.

Each morning, Christie relayed the baby’s progress, saying that mother bird still brought food. Christie also put water out near the folded chair and  told of a visit from one of the little bird’s siblings. It was such a remarkable journey to share.

Several days later, Christie said the fledgling had finally flown away from its safe haven. She had seen it perched, with its mother, on the backyard fence.

More and more, I grow to adore and admire this charming bird family. Check for other stories on this blog concerning the remarkable Mockingbird, the state bird of Texas.

After spending a long weekend at the OWFI conference (http://www.owfi.org/) earlier this month, I came back with tools to hopefully get my epub books out there and selling. One hint I learned from Smashwords guru, Mark Coker is that the cover is many times the first thing a potential reader will see and evaluate as it whether or not they want to pick your book up from the shelf in the brick and mortar bookstores or take a peek at it online. So, yesterday I spent many hours working on new covers for all three books either currently available for Kindle or that will soon be available there. Here are my three new covers. I would love feedback k from you as to what impact they make.

BTW, check out Mark Coker’s FREE books about epublishing. Here are the Amazon.com links:

The sessions with Mark Coker were among the BEST, in my opinion at the Oklahoma Conference (http://www.owfi.org/).

Just got back from OWFI Conference, held in Norman Oklahoma. It is one of the best that I have ever attended. The group is very professional.

Here is a link to their website. http://www.owfi.org/

Here is their contact information:

Oklahoma Writers’ Federation, Inc.
PO Box 54302
Oklahoma City, OK 73154

President – Patty Stith
Treasurer – Barbara Shepherd

They have a yearly contest that includes 35 categories from essays to published novels.  Even if your entry does not place, critique feedback is given on all entries.

One of my writing “buddies” from the group I attend in The Woodlands, TX placed second in the essay category. WTG! Tracey Paul. Her essay was about a day hike gone bad for a diabetic who had not brought extra insulin in her pack. Tracey read the piece at our Monday night meeting before she entered the contest. It was very compelling.

For those of you who have enjoyed the memoir pieces posted on “Creative Musings of Ledia R” (my blog) taken from my days as a United States Naval enlisted, I found a publisher at the conference who might be interested in publishing my book.  Also, I spoke with an agent interested in reading my fantasy action adventure novel set in Japan.

Also, for quite some time, I have wanted to turn my fantasy action adventure novels into graphic novels, so I attended the session at the conference. There I befriended one of the speakers who has made a living as the writer side of the team that also includes several artists. He has agreed to mentor me as I adapt my novel to a comic book.

Good Times!

As always, hope you enjoy the site!

Crystal Ball

(Photo found at this site: http://tinyurl.com/bwq2857al-ball/)

Tendrils of moonlight filtered through the window as one silver finger rested upon the crystal ball.  Brunda smiled as an explosion of color began to form within the orb.  The two sorceresses leaned in unison to watch the rainbow eruption.

Then within her mind, Druzelle began to hear the same words over and over,  “Scared, Hurt, My Head Is Hurt, Brunda-Druzelle, Brunda-Druzelle, Help!”

“I hear her!”  Druzelle exclaimed.  Brunda smiled wryly while the multi-colors within the crystal ball merged to form the golden haired child.  Luena was seated on horseback, surrounded by several men, including the Earl of Campbell, and closely guarded by Yulricka.

“I recognize that stretch of road!”  Druzelle clapped her hands.

“Yes, as do I,” Brunda nodded.  “I will meet you there, Sister.”  She tossed the words over her shoulder as she took up her broom and leapt through the doorway, airborne.

“Yes!”  Druzelle affirmed.

The direction the party traveled led to a wayside inn of unsavory reputation.  Towards this place, Brunda aimed her broom.  She came to a stop and dismounted only moments before the ill-fated band arrived.  With hatred glazed eyes, the old witch stood directly in the middle of the road, waiting.  Within moments, Druzelle joined her.

In order to create as much chaos as possible, the rotund Druzelle decided to conjure an illusion that she and Brunda were giant ogresses, equipped with battle-axes and spiked clubs.  She chuckled to herself as she wove the spell.  “Brunda will hate it and it will not fool Yulricka, but what fun to watch the mortal curs scatter like leaves in the wind.”

When Brunda realized what Druzelle was up to, she started to protest vehemently.  But then the irony of it became very clear and Brunda allowed the glamour.

The first ones to see them reacted just as Druzelle had hoped.  Dropping their weapons, the men bolted for the woods, screaming and shouting at the horror they had beheld.

Then Yulricka saw.  “It is not what you think.” the traitor jeered.  “There are no hulks blocking our way.  Just a pair of enfeebled old women trying to frighten us with their carnival act.”

Wild rage consumed Brunda.  “That is the last straw!”  she thundered.  Reaching within her cloak, she drew out a pouch of crushed herbs.  With a wave of her hand, she began to weave an incantation.

But when she looked up to release the final words, she saw that Yulricka had suddenly vanished.  “Where is she; where did that mangy hag fly off too?”

Brunda felt a tap against her shoulder and the sound of Druzelle clearing her throat.  “I did it, sister. We cannot have our consciences burdened with the killing of another, even though it be a traitorous witch. I am sorry if I have angered you, but I put her into the black abyss.  It will take her a few years to figure a way out.”

“You hope.” Scowled Brunda. Then she turned her attention toward the Earl.

Even without his magician consort, the man sat upon his horse as arrogant as ever. “Well,” he blustered. “Do you intend on sending me to the abyss as well? I would like to know how you would explain my disappearance to the town’s folk.”

Brunda’s smile was brutal. “I explain myself to no one, Campbell.  And no, I do not intend to send you to the abyss; that would be all too nice a punishment for the likes of you.”

Then her smile was gone. In its place, Brunda’s face became a cyclone of revenge. “I let you go without punishment once before, but this time you have gone too far.”

A wild look came into Druzelle’s eyes as she desperately tried to draw Brunda’s attention toward herself.  “Let me be, Sister!”  Brunda thundered.

Then she turned back to the insolent Earl.  “I curse you with the Plagues of Job.  Job was a Godly man and passed the tests, but let us see how well, one such as you, will fair.”

The ground beneath their feet began to rumble as the sorceress raised her hands.  A flux of greenish oozed dripped from Brunda’s fingertips before turning into lightning and striking the air surrounding the Earl. He lowered his head and raised his arms to shield his face.

Brunda was wild with laughter as an emerald vapor enveloped Campbell, who began to cough and choke, but not one of his men dared reach out to assist him. Soon, the foul, green cloud consumed him.

Brunda dusted her hands, picked up her broom and walked over to where Druzelle had joined Luena. The little girl looked shaken, but she smiled at her friends.

Brunda lifted Luena from the horse and placed her on the broom beside Mandrake.  Before climbing aboard herself, Brunda turned back to survey her handiwork.

The green mist had finally evaporated and the Earl could be seen still astride his horse.  With childish curiosity, Luena turned back to see, but quickly averted her eyes.  For the once arrogant Earl sat slumped over in his saddle, his entire body, or at least what showed beyond his clothing, was covered with seeping raw boils.

Through his agony the Earl vowed, “This is not over, witch!”

Brunda merely smiled as she climbed aboard her broom. “Only because you are a fool.”
