The flavor of the Cosmic Crisp® apple is the perfect balance of tart and sweet. This makes the apple ideal for snacking, baking, cooking, juicing or any other way you like to enjoy apples. We call it the Cosmic CRISP® apple for a reason — one crunch and you’ll know why! They are also exceptionally juicy and are naturally slow to brown.
Cosmic Crisp® apples are non-GMO, as are most apples grown in Washington State. A cross between the Honeycrisp and the Enterprise varieties, the Cosmic Crisp® apple was classically bred over 20 years through Washington State University’s world-class fruit breeding program.

Yes, Cosmic Crisp® apples have a food-grade wax on them. Apple waxes are made from natural ingredients and are certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to be safe to eat. After harvest, apples are washed and brushed to remove leaves and field dirt before they are packed for shipping to your local market. This cleaning process removes the fruit’s natural original wax coating, so to protect the fruit, many apple packers will reapply a commercial grade wax.
There is a natural variance in the amount of wax on conventionally grown Cosmic Crisp® apples — resulting in some with more than others. We recommend washing your apple with warm water and soap while lightly scrubbing to remove it.
Yes and No. Sometimes organic apples are coated with a natural, plant-based wax called Yumbrella. This eco-friendly wax is made from plant-derived ingredients and is applied to help protect the fruit, retain moisture, and preserve freshness during storage and transport. It is a food-safe, non-toxic alternative to synthetic waxes and aligns with organic farming practices. Each supplier makes the choice to wax or not wax organic apples, so not all organic apples will have a wax coating.

The answer to this question is both yes and no. Yes, you can plant the seed and grow apples, but they won’t be a duplicate of the Cosmic Crisp® apples you purchase in the grocery store. The Cosmic Crisp® apple is a product of 20+ years of breeding, and commercial growers plant rootstock instead of seed. In addition, the tree requires a pollinator – it’s very similar to having children. The offspring could look more like the mother or they could look more like the father. It’s the same with an apple; you can’t guarantee what the offspring will be. It may be similar to a Cosmic Crisp® apple, but it will not be a true Cosmic Crisp® apple.
