Evolution

The Copper Mark is Evolving

The Copper Mark is undergoing an organisational evolution this year which will position us to grow and pursue of our evolved vision, mission, and approach.

This evolution will help our organisation bring credible standards and robust assurance to more sites, beyond any particular metal or position in the value chain, to the places where mineral and metal products are mined, fabricated, transformed or recycled. It will also allow us to offer more ways to distinguish responsible producers across the value chain — and strengthen vertical connections between them — to provide customers with the transparency and assurance they need to make responsible sourcing and production decisions.

The evolved Copper Mark will adopt a new name, brand, and governance structure to help us build on our track record of implementing credible standards and robust assurance at more than 100 sites around the world.

Through is evolution, we will take ownership and manage implementation of the new mining standard, currently under development through the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative (CMSI) — a partnership of the Copper Mark, ICMM, Mining Association of Canada and World Gold Council. The CMSI aims to bring together the best aspects of partners’ four well-established standards into one, global standard that reduces complexity and clarifies responsible practices for mining companies of all sizes, across all locations and commodities.

We will also launch our Responsible Metals Value Chain Platform (VC Platform), designed to foster value-chain-wide transparency to strengthen vertical links and connect responsible actors who mine, fabricate, transform and recycle metals through unique initiatives, tools, events and knowledge. The new VC Platform will complement and support the development of our Mid-Stream Standard for copper, molybdenum, nickel and zinc and our Chain of Custody Standard.

Evolved vision

A world where mineral and metal products are made responsibly as the foundation of a sustainable future.

Evolved mission

To apply credible standards and robust assurance at sites where mineral and metal products are mined, fabricated, transformed, and recycled.

Evolved approach

  • Drive positive change on the ground to respect human rights, benefit communities, and protect environments.
  • Strengthen value chain transparency to connect responsible actors.
  • Complement existing initiatives by addressing gaps in the value chain.

Evolved name and brand

The Copper Mark's evolved name and brand will be announced this year.

Evolved governance structure

The Copper Mark’s current independent Board of Directors will increase to 17 members, including a Chair and 16 non-executive Directors. The new structure includes more space for stakeholder voices and balances decision-making power between commercial and non-commercial actors from across the minerals and metals value chain. It also puts value chain (midstream and downstream) producers and their stakeholders on equal footing with mining (upstream) producers and their stakeholders to shape our activities across the value chain.

The new structure was developed as part of the CMSI process to fit our evolved value-chain wide mission. More details about the new structure were published in September 2025 in the CMSI Governance Model.

Governance appointments

On 17 March 2026, we announced Daniel Ortega-Pacheco's appointment as Director and Chair Designate to serve initially as a non-executive Director before taking the role of Chair of the Copper Mark’s evolved Board of Directors once it is established later this year.

Applications are now under review ahead of the appointment of 16 non-executive Directors to come later this year.
