Mergers have become a lifeline for nonprofits. Will foundations help cover the costs?

It’s easy to picture a scenario in which Community Link, a 96-year-old Charlotte nonprofit, simply faded away.


The charity, which helped low- and middle-income residents with home-buying and tax preparation, received much of its $3 million budget from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Even before the start of the Trump administration, Community Link was already struggling with fundraising — especially the 25 percent match that HUD requires, says Tameka Gunn, the organization’s former president. With the new administration came tougher requirements and a funding freeze — prompting the charity’s board to decide this summer that it was time to wind down.

The Agribusiness Council of Indiana announced that Melissa Rekeweg will serve as president and CEO, effective in October. Rekeweg is currently managing director of the National Council for Agricultural Education. -Inside Indiana Business

Fort Wayne-based Science Central named Mandee Mikulski executive director. Mikulski previously was executive director of the Anderson Museum of Art. -Inside Indiana Business

Indianapolis-based Lucille Raines Residence named Jodie Little executive director. Little most recently served as community outreach and engagement manager at the Nyla Nova Foundation.

The Humane Society for Hamilton County named Terry Massey its first vice president and chief operating officer. Massey previously was senior director of human resources shared services at The Heritage Group.

Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre named Mary Susan Buhner development and engagement strategist. Buhner most recently worked with The AEA Institute as president of academic services.

EmployIndy named Lisa Beyer human resources director. Beyer previously was human resources director at USA Gymnastics.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Hendricks County Community Foundation received a $100,000 grant as part of the eighth phase of Lilly Endowment Inc.’s Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT VIII) initiative. The unrestricted grant may be used for any charitable purposes the foundation chooses. Read more


The Hope Center received a $10,000 grant from the KFC Foundation to support the David Nolen Pantry of Hope, which provides food to individuals facing insecurity.


Kids Discovery Factory in Batesville is launching a $5.4 million construction and renovation project to create a children’s museum for southeastern Indiana. Since 2022, the nonprofit has operated a 2,000-square-foot pilot museum and is now expanding to serve more families and children in the region. Read more


United Way of Central Indiana expanded its Workforce Pathways Accelerator Initiative, partnering with five nonprofits to provide training, certifications and coaching that help participants secure family-sustaining jobs. After surpassing first-year goals with 76 enrollees and 41 credentials earned, the initiative now includes new partners and grants to reach more residents across Central Indiana. Read more


TechSoup and Tech Impact launched the Virtual CTO Program to provide small nonprofits with budgets under $1 million access to expert technology planning and support. The initiative aims to reduce barriers to digital transformation and build long-term tech capacity. Read more 


The Marion County Commission on Youth is accepting applications for the 2025–26 Fever Confidence Program. This program will bring together 15 – 20 high school seniors to take advantage of leadership opportunities that build confidence, support mental health, inspire wellness. Grant recipients receive a $2,500 educational scholarship. For requirements and to apply
