Man, I feel like updating LJ is like working out--I do it in short bursts, but I'm never that consistent, which I regret because I read other people's stuff all the time. Oh well, better now than never. I have been spending a lot more time on facebook. I guess that indulges my ADD tendencies to flick around and never commit to anything particularly lengthy. But this is an instinct I have to fight! I could descend even further and go to twitter. . . but it just feels wrong somehow.

Well, the modern world is overwhelming and perplexing anyways. Sometimes I kind of wish we all just spent our time sitting around a fire, trying not to starve or get killed by wild animals. It all just seems simpler somehow.

I am sleepy. Way too sleepy to work out, but I'm going to show up anyways because part of my new thing is to actually try and do stuff that is good for me. Of course, it did not occur to me last night, when I watched old episodes of Dr. Quinn until midnight, that perhaps getting to sleep earlier would be part of the "stuff that is good for me." It has also occurred to me that spending too much time watching fictional romances that create unrealistic expectations that cannot possibly be fulfilled by nonfictional men probably falls into the realm of "stuff that ISN'T good for me," thus double-thwarting the "doing stuff that is good for me" goal.

Oh well. . . it's a process. . .

Yet another sign that I should stop spending so much money:

Starbucks will stop brewing decaf after 12:00pm

Though, this may just be a sign that I will be able to get fresher coffee, because it DOES say that they will brew it on request. It just means I will have to wait longer, which is fine, or get a decaf Americano, which is more expensive and therefore not fine.

Hurrah! I bought goggles last week, I am getting a bathing suit tomorrow, and I just ordered a new silicon swim cap that won't rip out my hair. This is all on the theory that if I buy enough stuff, I will be compelled to work out. It works, people, really. Just ask the yoga mat, weights, Tae Bo DVDs, and new Reeboks that are currently collecting dust in the back corner of my bedroom. . .

I am excited, and so is everyone else. We are happy. Thrilled! Bursting at the seams with the enormity of this historical moment. Really, I swear it. But CNN--and all other news outlets, however hard you try, you cannot capture the mood of this with a series of tired cliches.

If I see one more interview with someone from Indiana, or Chicago, or some other closely outlying area, in which the newscaster actually asks "why did you come to DC?" and the person actually replies "because it's a historical moment," I'm going to throw something large and damaging at the TV. Also, NBC, I get that the bridges from Virginia are closed. You've mentioned it as the top story, oh, about a hundred times. I know that it bears repetition so that people know what's going on. But really? Every half hour, twice, sandwiched between interviews with Philadelphians who have journeyed to DC to experience this historical moment? GARRR!!

Why do I watch TV? My cynicism doesn't need any more excuses to rear its ugly head. . .

Cold cold cold cold. . . I can't believe I actually went downtown yesterday. It was so freakin' cold it felt like daggers of ice were stabbing at my eyeballs every time the wind blew. And yes, I know that those of you in the midwest and northeast are in much worse shape, but there's a reason I don't live up there. This is not supposed to happen in DC. At worst, we're supposed to hover around 32 and get lots of wintry mix that ties up traffic enough to delay school but that goes away by mid-afternoon. Instead, we're living in a freakin' sub-zero freezer.

Ah, global warming. You destroy the Great Barrier Reef, you melt the glaciers, you add more violent hurricanes to idyllic tourist spots, and you dramatically change weather patterns in unpredictable and dangerous ways. Is there anything you CAN'T do, global warming?

So I'm driving to a meeting tonight and I hear this story on NPR about White House butlers--surprisingly fascinating. The interesting thing was, at one point the interviewer asked this former butler--who was African American--what it would mean to him that Obama and his family are moving into the White House. I don't even remember what his answer was, but all of the sudden I started to tear up. I mean, I was really getting emotional and overwhelmed.

Then it hit me for the first time since I took that deep sigh of relief on election day.

Wow.

What a momentous and beautiful thing this is. I don't know how I'm going to get through inauguration without some SERIOUS waterworks.

Oh, New York Times, how have we found ourselves on such opposite sides? Once, we were so close. We explored cutting-edge ideas about education and thought-provoking mental health studies. We laughed at a multitude of Republican foibles and Bush's (and then Palin's) weekly gaffes. We learned about the newest shows on Broadway and shared in the joys of New York fashion week. We journeyed to Montreal for 36 hours together and took fantasy vacations to Machu Picchu. But as you continued to publish your ridiculously one-sided articles about the Israel-Hamas conflict we just had to part ways.

In case you've forgotten, New York Times, Hamas is a TERRORIST organization. Like, the real kind. With suicide bombers and stuff. They have deliberately placed civilians in harm's way for years and years. And yet, you continue to act as though they have some kind of legitimate government/ruling authority and/or concern for innocent Palestinian citizens of Gaza.

Sigh. You know, your once-charming liberal bias is only acceptable when it supports MY worldview.

Apparently, Maryland scored first in the country for the quality of its public schools. As a product of said public schools, I am pretty stoked by that news. Woohoo! I is smart.

So THIS is why I always walk out of Tyson's Corner Mall with a dazed, bewildered feeling and a sudden desire to go hiking. . .
