Furuno: “Hydroacoustic Basics and Fundamentals”

Presenter: Andrew Stradling

Location: Harbor Room, Best Western Kodiak Inn

Modern commercial fishing relies heavily on hydroacoustic technology such as sonar, echosounders, and multibeam systems to observe and interpret what is happening beneath the surface. This session introduces the core principles behind hydroacoustics and how they relate to the real-world performance of modern sonar and echo sounding systems.

Topics include sound propagation in water, frequency and wavelength, refraction, target reflectivity, transducer design, beam formation, and how common sonar settings such as power, pulse length, ping rate, gain, and TVG affect the interpretation of acoustic images.

The session also covers transducer installation and how mechanical, acoustic, electrical, and waterflow noise can influence sonar performance. This is a vendor-neutral session designed to help fishermen, technicians, and fisheries professionals better interpret sonar images, optimize performance, and make informed decisions at sea.
