What is Code Vein 2?

Code Vein 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to Bandai Namco’s 2019 post-apocalyptic action RPG, officially revealed on June 6, 2025, during the Summer Game Fest. The game returns to a haunting, dystopian world where Revenants once preserved a fragile balance in the face of collapse. However, a new threat known as the Luna Rapacis has begun corrupting Revenants, causing them to lose their sanity and transform into terrifying creatures called Horrors. In Code Vein 2, players take on the role of a Revenant Hunter, and after dying from a mission, is revived by a mysterious girl named Lou. With her help and her ability to travel through time, the player is sent 100 years into the past. There, they must navigate a world teetering on the edge of ruin. Choices and events in this past timeline will have direct consequences on the future.

Combat in Code Vein 2 builds upon the first game’s mechanics, with reports of more fluid pacing, expanded weapon variety, and deeper character customization. Familiar systems such as the Partner mechanic, Drain Attacks, and Blood Codes return.

The game is currently in development and is expected to launch sometime in 2026.

Code Vein 2: Everything We Know So Far

Code Vein 2 Walkthrough Trailer: Gameplay and Mechanics Preview

Bandai Namco has released a walkthrough trailer for Code Vein 2, offering an extended look at the core mechanics of the game through the exploration of one of its dungeons, the Sunken Pylon. In this area, players must navigate a submerged ruin to find the problem causing the waters of the Sunken City to be polluted. The trailer also shows the audience a preview of the game's story, revealing that the player (a Revenant Hunter) will travel between the past and present to prevent the world from collapsing. The walkthrough trailer also introduces Josee, a companion who plays a significant role in certain sections of the game.

The walkthrough confirms that Code Vein 2 will feature a total of seven weapon types, allowing for different combat approaches. While not all weapon categories were shown, the preview highlights two: the Halberd and a new addition to the series, the Dual Blades. Dual Blades emphasize aggressive, fast-paced combat, enabling players to chain combos and interrupt enemies with attacks, while the Halberd offers a more methodical playstyle, focusing on reach and positioning through lunes and pierces.

Combat customization in Code Vein 2 is further expanded by the Formae system, which functions similarly to the Gifts system from the first Code VeinFormae are divided into three categories: Weapon Formae, Bequeathed Formae, and Defensive Formae, each serving a different purpose in combat. These systems are designed to encourage playstyle diversity, allowing players to tailor their approach around offensive, utility, or survivability depending on their preferred playstyle. Similar to the Gifts, using Formae consumes Ichor, a resource generated by attacking enemies, rewarding players who choose an aggressive combat approach.

Companions also receive notable mechanical changes in Code Vein 2. Instead of being limited to direct participation in combat, players can now choose between Summoning a companion to fight alongside them or Assimilate with them to temporarily boost their stats and abilities. This system introduces a more customized combat experience, especially in challenging encounters that would require either damage or survivability. Additionally, companions can revive the player when defeated, though doing so will render them temporarily incapacitated.

The walkthrough culminates in the reveal of the boss of the Sunken Pylon, the Metagen Remnant. This large humanoid boss uses flaming attacks to control the space and pressure the player, alongside heavy slam attacks that generate AoE damage. According to Josee, the Metagen Remnant is responsible for contaminating the waters and inhabitants of the Sunken City. The encounter with the Metagen Remnant serves as a showcase for the mechanics introduced in the preview, showing weapons, formae, and companion mechanics in a single fight.

The trailer then concludes with the announcement of the Character Creator Demo scheduled for release on January 23. This demo will allow players to fully customize their characters while also exploring the MagMell Institute, providing an early glimpse into the world of Code Vein 2. Characters created in the demo can be transferred directly into the full game upon its launch on January 30, giving players a head start.

Developers are introducing a new build system, wherein players are allowed play with their builds to suit their playstyle, which is also similar to the previous title, but the approach on this game is to give players a more immerse combat and build experience.

Code Vein 2 also introduces a new game mechanic, which is a key transportation feature, described as a magical spell rather than a conventional vehicle, developers call it the Motorcycle Forma. Players who play as the Revenant Hunter can summon this supernatural vehicle outside of dungeons in order to explore the post-apocalyptic world. The Motorcycle Forma is designed to match the game's gothic and classical feature, which blends seamlessly with the Revenant's style.

Producer Keita Iizuka recently shared key insights into the direction of the sequel and what players can expect. Building on the foundations of the first game, Code Vein 2 promises a deeper, more emotionally driven action RPG experience with refined gameplay and dramatic storytelling. Players will take on the role of a Revenant Hunter, an entity who opposes revenants. One of the main themes emphasized by the development team is overcoming adversity alongside a partner. Like the original, Code Vein 2 brings back the partner system, allowing players to team up with companions. This time, the bond between characters is promised to be even more meaningful. Returning gameplay elements include Blood Codes and Drain Attacks. These familiar systems will be expanded upon with new mechanics, aiming to make the experience feel fresh even for returning fans.

To add to this, Director Hiroshi Yoshimura also shared that Code Vein 2 aims to evolve the original’s formula through stronger storytelling, deeper partner dynamics, and more refined combat. He emphasized two main pillars of the game: emotional drama with characters, and tense battles with enemies. These are the foundation of how the game is designed to play and feel. The story spans two timelines, allowing players to build bonds with characters in both the present and 100 years in the past. In regard to combat, the development team has made major improvements to design, animation, and battle planning. Their aim is to deliver tighter, more challenging encounters. As in the original game, players will be joined by an AI partner, but this time the partner system is a more integral part of the overall narrative. The developers want players to feel a sense of achievement that comes from overcoming dangerous foes alongside someone you’ve built a bond with.

Code Vein 2 Story & Setting

Code Vein 2 takes place in a not-so-distant, post-apocalyptic future and promises a dramatic, emotionally driven story where revenants struggle against impending doom. As shared in the recent Producer Message video during the Summer Showcase, Code Vein 2 builds on the predecessor's foundation with challenging action gameplay and exploration, while aiming to deliver a more evolved experience. Familiar features like Drain Attacks, the Partner System, and Blood Codes return in Code Vein 2.

The story unfolds in a world torn apart by a catastrophic event known as the Resurgence. Before this apocalypse, tensions between humans and Revenants ran deep. But when the Resurgence pushed humanity to the brink of extinction, it was the Revenants who became their unexpected protectors. That peace was short-lived, as a new threat called the Luna Rapacis emerged, corrupting Revenants and turning them into monstrous creatures known as Horrors. The world is then at the edge of collapse.

story2 homepage code vein 2 wiki guide 600px

You play as the Revenant Hunter, one of the few capable of fighting these Horrors. After dying during a mission, the Hunter is revived by Lou, a mysterious Revenant girl who shares half of her heart to bring you back. Lou also possesses the ability to travel through time, which is a power tied to the game's story. Together, you embark on a mission to uncover the truth behind the Resurgence, the Luna Rapacis, and the Horrors threatening the world. Players will travel 100 years into the past, a time when the world was still in ruin, but Revenants maintained a fragile order. These two timelines intertwine as your actions in the past directly influence the fate of the present. Along the way, you'll meet numerous revenants across both timelines, each playing a role in this desperate fight for survival.

Code Vein 2 builds on the foundations of the original game, but there are still some elements about the story that remain a mystery. The connection between Code Vein 2 and its predecessor is yet to be fully revealed, but returning themes such as the Revenants and their transformations.

Jails in Code Vein 2

Jails are specialized equipment used by Revenant Hunters that stores a Revenant’s heart on their back, allowing them to channel its power.

They provide exceptional defense and enable devastating vampiric attacks that deal massive damage.

Exploring Dungeons in Code Vein 2

Players will explore the crumbling remains of a once-thriving metropolis, now submerged and buried beneath layers of ruin. These forgotten landscapes are inhabited by transformed revenants who once lived there.

Hidden deep within underground structures and ancient facilities designed to remain concealed, players may uncover secrets, face challenging enemies, and maybe piece together the history behind the world's collapse.

Combat Overview in Code Vein 2

Code Vein 2 builds upon the foundation of its predecessor while refining and expanding its core combat loop. One of the returning key mechanics is Ichor, a vital resource that fuels your abilities in battle. For those unfamiliar with the first game, Ichor functions similarly to a mana system, and it's replenished by landing attacks.

combat homepage code vein 2 wiki guide 400px

Ichor is essential for Revenants to use their special abilities known as Gifts, which consist of magical abilities, unique skills, buffs, weapon skills, and many more. Combat in Code Vein 2 will likely revolve around this.

Formae in Code Vein 2

Formae are supernatural powers inherent to Revenants. By harnessing the power of the Jail, Revenant Hunters can activate Formae to enhance their combat abilities.

formae homepage code vein 2 wiki guide 400px

They can transform standard weapon attacks into powerful techniques, strike from a distance, inflict status effects, and more.

Bequeathed Formae

Bequeathed Formae is a unique type of Formae that channels the energy of a Revenant.

bequeathed formae homepage code vein 2 wiki guide 400px

It summons special weapons that cannot be replicated by current technology and uses them to attack. Though difficult to master, these powerful weapons offer devastating attacks and become a valuable asset once fully controlled.

Blood Codes in Code Vein 2

Code Vein 2 brings back Blood Codes, otherwise known as Classes, which gives you the flexibility to tailor your playstyle to your preferences. Each Blood Code comes with its own strengths, weaknesses, and set of Gifts, making them a central part of both combat strategy and character customization. The confirmed Blood Code archetypes include:

  • Balanced – A versatile class that blends melee combat, skills, and vampiric abilities. Ideal for players who want a well-rounded approach.
  • Technical – Suited for high-dexterity playstyles. Offers agility, precision, and more intricate mechanics for advanced players.
  • Combat Focused – Geared toward raw power and strength-based weapons. Perfect for those who prefer hard-hitting, aggressive gameplay.

In the first Code Vein, players could acquire over 32 different Blood Codes, many of which were unlocked through exploration or through NPCs. This progression system encouraged experimentation, and it's expected that Code Vein 2 will follow a similar structure.

Gifts in Code Vein 2

Gifts function as the game’s equivalent of skills or magic, offering a wide range of abilities that enhance the player and their Companions. These abilities allow players to buff themselves and their Companions, heal allies, debuff enemies, or deal direct damage to enemies.

All active Gifts consume Ichor, which is the primary resource for Revenants to use their special abilities, so players must manage them during battle.

Vehicles in Code Vein 2

In the footage revealed so far, the Revenant Hunter can be seen riding a motorcycle to traverse the world more quickly. Interestingly, during one of the showcased attack animations, the Revenant Hunter appears to sprout wings mid-combat. While it hasn't been confirmed whether this ties into traversal mechanics, it does raise the possibility that other movement options, such as gliding or aerial maneuvers, might exist in some capacity.

vehicles homepage code vein 2 wiki guide 400px

For now, that remains speculation, but it's clear that Code Vein 2 is aiming to evolve how players navigate its post-apocalyptic world.

Companions in Code Vein 2

Companions are special NPCs who fight alongside the player during combat. As you progress through the story, you’ll be able to recruit new Companions, though only one can accompany you at a time.

companion homepage code vein 2 wiki guide 400px

Companions are optional, but it is recommended to have one especially since they can flank enemies, draw aggro, heal, and even provide buffs. Footage has already confirmed that Lou is one of the main Companions, and players can expect to meet and team up with more as they progress the story.

Blood Veils in Code Vein 2

Blood Veils are a core piece of equipment functioning as a unique form of armor that provides protection and enhances the player’s combat capabilities in multiple ways. In addition to mitigating incoming damage, Blood Veils directly influence the potency of Gifts, which are abilities that players can use to perform unique actions such as buffing and healing themselves and their Companions, debuffing Enemies or dealing direct damage to enemies.

Blood Veil also function as a tool for Ichor Drain, which allows players to extract Ichor from enemies. Blood Veils also feature their own stat scaling does not affect your character’s actual stats. In the first game, the scaling values displayed in the Blood Veil’s stat screen indicate how effectively the Veil draws from your existing character stats to boost aspects like Gift potency or Ichor Drain efficiency. the first game, the scaling shown in the Blood Veil’s stats helped players optimize builds, and we can expect the same system to return in Code Vein 2. Players can acquire Blood Veils in various ways: by discovering them in treasure chests, earning them from quests, receiving them from NPCs, purchasing them from merchants, or obtaining them as drops from enemies and bosses.

The game is a mess. It lags, doesn't play well, and has enemies so aggressive they forget to let the player breathe or have a useful dodge since every attack is a roll-catch. Why do they think difficulty no matter what (including artificial difficulty), is the only appeal of the souls genre? It normally has so much more to offer such as exploration, the scenery, the atmosphere, tough, but fair combat as in not the artificial bs this one's pushing so hard for, different weapon types as well as spells that are fun to try out and have them actually be viable in the game and against bosses rather than having to resort to quick weapons, parrying, and swift skills only. If you get railroaded into one build most of the time, then the diverse weapons and skills are completely pointless. No one asked for this.
