Why do you need the report?

I often see routine reports produced in business when there is no clear point. They seem to be produced because of some vague expectation that reports are required, rather than because there is a clear need for reports to help people do their job. This article talks about the phenomenon, and recounts a time when I watched the process of defining such reports. It is a true story. This is not a fable!
