Purim Gifts letter 2020

Whoops! I almost forgot to unlock this. It's been a hectic weekend. Sorry about that.

This is my first time doing Purim Gifts, so this is all a bit new to me. Honestly, my fic and art tastes are very broad, the content I'll read is very broad, and the main reason I enjoy doing exchanges is just to see more cool content made about characters and canons I love. So I'm super easy to please.

Some general things I like: Friendship fic, character studies and backstory, smut and kink (especially BDSM-related kinks and spanking), humor, loyalty kink, pining,  enemies becoming friends/lovers and maybe not completely trusting each other or completely moving past their prior conflicts, unexpected friendships. I also like all sorts of narrative structures and POVs--epistolary fiction, second person, you name it.

Dislikes: Animal abuse, explicit underage sex, non-powered AUs for X-Men (I generally prefer it if the characters still have powers and are still mutants in AUs, even if it's an AU where they're not superheroes).

I'm a multishipper and like a lot of characters, but here are some of my favorites:

X-Men (Alternate Timeline Movies): Erik, Jean, Charles/Erik, Erik/Hank, Erik/Jean

X-Men (Comics): Jean Grey, Ororo Munroe, Magneto, Wanda Maximoff, Kitty Pryde, Illyana Rasputin, Emma Frost, Jean/Ororo, Jean/Emma, Kitty/Ilyana, Magneto/Charles Xavier.

Schitt's Creek: David Rose, Alexis Rose, Moira Rose, Johnny Rose, Stevie Budd, Ronnie Lee. I'm not a big shipper in this fandom, but I'm definitely cool with receiving ship!fic.

Megillat Ester | Book of Esther: I've liked Esther and the Book of Esther since I was young, and this seemed like a good occasion to add it to my requests.

The L Word: Generation Q

Just watched the first episode of The L Word: Generation Q. Because of course it was a foregone conclusion that I would. I have a big love/hate relationship with the original show. It was airing when I was between the ages of 16-21, which was a time when I was figuring out my sexuality a lot, and I was old enough to be aware of it and wanted to see it but young enough that maybe I put too many expectations on what was ultimately a batshit soap opera. I've rewatched it a couple times, but I still remember feeling burned by the crazy final season with its "murder mystery" that didn't go anywhere. I also remember the weird webisodes they put online afterward that included things like random incest revelations.

So I was curious to see how the tone and content of Generation Q would compare, and I just finished watching the first episode. My thoughts, complete with some spoilers and speculation:

* The new characters are...fine. I don't dislike them, but they aren't grabbing me a whole lot yet.

* Of course Bette and Tina are divorced now. That was surprisingly satisfying for me, because I never believed their relationship could actually survive long-term.

* The fact that Angelica is 16 now makes me feel really old.

* Bette running for mayor feels very true to her character.

* I'm a little uneasy about the revelation they seem to be building up to about why Bette is running and why she's so passionate about the dangers of opioids. I'm worried they're going to reveal that Kit became addicted to opioids or something.

* I'm not crazy about Alice's hair.

* I'm surprisingly on board with Shane being mysteriously wealthy and married now. Yeah, it's kind of silly, but I'm on board with a certain level of silliness from The L Word.

Verdict: I'll keep watching. I'm curious about where things go, though I wish that the new characters felt like they had bigger plots.

Movie time!

A couple years ago, I apparently started a new tradition of marathoning James McAvoy movies around Thanksgiving and Christmas as I don’t really celebrate either much and end up having time at home to do things like watch movies. I’m sure this tradition will end eventually when I run out of things to watch, but this will not be that year.

Any suggestions for what to watch this year? I’ve seen a lot of his movies already, but am not opposed to re-watching some things.

Also, if anyone is keen to join me virtually, let me know. I’ve been thinking it would be fun to organize some watch parties, but Nov-Dec is a busy time for a lot of people and I’m not terribly good at organizing things, so organizing anything formally is on the back burner for now.

NaNoWriMo 2019

Every year, I say I’m not doing NaNoWriMo, and every year I end up making a token effort anyway because I have enough friends who do it that it’s a good conversation piece.

This year, I’m actually doing okay! I have 6,700 words, which is definitely below par, but I think it’s the highest I’ve gotten doing NaNo. I’m taking the “NaNo rebel” route by working on multiple things. I didn’t feel like devoting 100% of my writing attention to my novel WiP was how I wanted to spend November, so I’ve decided to count all my words across multiple projects.

For the first week, I mostly focused on writing some treats for the Trick or Treat exchange.

I’ve now shifted my focus over to an original novel that I’m rewriting, but I’m also focusing on finishing my X-Men WiP (The Damage Done) so that I can finish posting it. No way do I want to spend the entirety of November without working on it.

Going into this, I wondered if working on multiple projects, including some smaller ones like the Trick or Treat fics, would be an easier way of getting down words.

It turns out that the answer to that, at least for me in this context, is “LOL no.”

Throwing out some words for my novel that I’ve been thinking about for ages and won’t have to share with anyone for a while is a whole different game than coming up with ideas, writing complete stories, and editing them to a point where I’m comfortable posting them publicly. I’m actually not sure if NaNo was a motivator for me last week or not. I was already motivated to write treats for the exchange, and I sort of had to put NaNo on the back burner since the focus was on something other than word count. I expect the same thing will happen with The Damage Done--I have enough written on it that most of what I’m doing right now is revision and adding to existing scenes, which is necessary work but not great for boosting word count.

But that’s okay, because I’m still doing great at being productive, and I find I’m happier doing NaNo if I play a bit fast and loose with the rules and adapt it to what I want to be working on. I’ve gotten a bit bad at writing consistently (thanks in no small part to the nonogram app I put on my phone, which has taken some of my attention away from writing on my lunch break), so re-establishing the habit of writing every day/most days is my main priority right now. Trick or Treat 2019 Letter

Dear Trick or Treat Author,

Thank you for writing for me! I like a lot of genres, tropes, and kinks, so I'm pretty flexible. All optional details are very optional. Also, I like both happy/fluffy fic and some pretty dark stuff, so feel free to go in whichever direction you want. I don't mind unhappy endings. I have some favorite ships, which I've included, but I also enjoy gen and friendship fic just as much. As for content and things like narrative structure/POV, unless I've listed it in my DNWs, you can assume I'm okay with it (this includes things like character death, infidelity, unhappy endings, etc).

Also, I'm happy to receive both fic and art. I don't know if I'm very good at giving art-specific prompts, but I've tried to list some likes that could be interpreted in a visual medium.

General DNWs: Animal abuse/death--particularly involving pets (things like non-graphic references to farming or hunting are generally fine), readerfic, dental trauma.

Fandom-specific DNW exceptions: I'd prefer no non-powered AUs for X-Men Alternate Timeline Movies fandom. Also, I didn't list animal abuse/death as a DNW for Annihilation or Alien because I feel like animal-based horror is a big aspect of Annihilation and that there's some potential for that in Alien, and I'm okay with it.

General likes:

- Friendship fic
- Character studies and backstory
- Smut
- For porn, things I like include like anal sex/play, spanking, D/s and power play, slavefic, A/B/O, BDSM AUs, dub-con/non-con, humiliation, and watersports. I like both consensual and non-con/dub-con interpretations. Also, I'm cool with a lot of kinks written in a way that's not explicitly sexual, like spanking as non-sexualized punishment or A/B/O worldbuilding. I'm also happy with vanilla smut, though!
- Darkfic/art
- Humor and cracky premises
- Loyalty kink (one character is very loyal toward and cares for another. Recognition of that from the other character can be nice but isn't essential)
- Pining (mutual or non-mutual)
- Enemies becoming friends/lovers and maybe not completely trusting each other or completely moving past their prior conflicts
- Bonding and unexpected friendships
- Ghosts and ghost stories
- I love Halloween, so if you want to do something Halloween-themed, I'm definitely game!
- I also like all sorts of narrative structures and POVs--epistolary fiction, second person, you name it.

Some specific likes for tricks:

- Body horror
- Tentacle monsters
- Gaslighting/manipulation
- Mind control
- Frightening visions/hallucinations/apparitions (take of this what you will--could be ghosts, hallucinations, telepathy, etc.)
- Characters not trusting their own perceptions/questioning reality
- Hauntings/ghosts
- Stockholm syndrome/lima syndrome
- Imprisonment

Living the WIP life / Gearing up for June

So...I've been working on the Frankenstory for a while now. The Frankenstory is the unofficial name of the X-Men WIP that I started two years ago and have been fiddling with ever since. I used to always write very linearly. Like, I could never even skip over scenes that were giving me trouble. But it turns out that that style of writing doesn't work as well when I work full time and don't feel like writing when I get home. So I wrote most of this fic in pieces in Google Docs, all out of order. And I've been filling in the gaps and rearranging scenes ever since. All in all, I'd call the method successful. I did write a lot, and I found I was able to capture my initial ideas much better than if I sat on them for a while. But this method definitely needs more refinement if I want to keep using it, because this WIP is a mess.

Anyway, it's almost done, but I made the decision of going ahead and starting to post it on AO3 as I finish revising. I debated whether it would make more sense to finish the fic completely first, but so far I feel good about my decision. It spurred me to make some narrative decisions that I was dragging my feet on. Anyway, if you like dark!Charles, dub-con, misuse of telepathy, and mutual Stockholm Syndrome and Lima Syndrome, here's my WIP.

I had this really ambitious idea that I would try to finish the main three X-Men movieverse WIPs I'm working on before Dark Phoenix comes out. The other two WIPs are an extended version of the Charles/Hank Ancient Rome fic I wrote recently and a post-X-Men Apocalypse AU involving Wanda Maximoff. All of these fics are AUs, so it's not liked I'm worried about Dark Phoenix jossing them, but whenever new canon comes out, I worry about it impacting what I'm inspired to write or how I see the characters, so I liked the idea of finishing these fics before then. I don't think that's really going to happen.

On a personal note, I don't know if I'm going to get around to seeing Dark Phoenix in theaters or not, and I'm a little sad about that. I'm really eager to see it, but I've been working on addressing some anxiety issues, and those issues are affecting my willingness to go to a movie theater right now. I don't want to let this affect my life too much, but I don't want it to be something that I stress out over. So I'm playing it by ear right now. In any case, I'm a spoiler fanatic, so it's not like I'll be in the dark about what happens. :P

Considering starting a community....

Unless my search skills have failed me, there doesn't seem to be any currently active community on DW for the X-Men movieverse. Would it be madness to consider starting one? Maaaybe, yeah. I'm not sure how much interest there would actually be. I'd also like to support the communities that have been started on Pillowfort. I'm not the greatest at self-promotion, and I'd really need to plan activities or something to spur any interest. I'd like to do it, but I don't want to half-ass it or get my hopes up.

The NaNo curse

I feel like NaNoWriMo might be cursed for me. I feel a little bad even joking about that, because I know, I know--it's an accountability and prioritization thing.

But the fact remains. No matter how much I water down NaNo to make it work for me, I always end up feeling like I've been less productive than I would have been if I didn't say I'm doing NaNo. I feel like I could set a goal of writing flash fiction for NaNo, and it still wouldn't happen for some reason. This year, I do have some decent excuses--real life has been a pain this month. Though, if I'm really being honest, writing in general hasn't been going great for the past few months. I struggled a bit with Trick or Treat this year even though I was really enthusiastic about my assignment and the prospect of writing treats.

This year, the NaNo casualty was my X-Men movieverse fic of doom, the 30k WIP I've been writing for the past year and told myself that I would absolutely finish during November, using NaNo as an excuse to nudge myself. This fic is also known as the Frankenfic, since I pieced together scenes haphazardly and am now trying to bring the damn thing to life.

I really do want to finish it. I feel like I need to so that I can focus on other things. I'm at that awkward point where my heart is starting to move on and my brain is losing interest. But I've put too much work into this damn thing to leave it unfinished, and I really just need to write the ending and flesh out some of the scenes in the middle. It's terrible, but at this point, I almost feel like I'd rather finish it even if it's not perfect or doesn't match my original vision as well as I'd like.

Trick or Treat 2018 Letter

This is my letter for the Trick or Treat exchange, 2018 edition.

I like all sorts of fic, so I'm pretty flexible! Also, I like both happy/fluffy fic and some pretty dark stuff, so feel free to go in whichever direction you want. I don't mind unhappy endings. I have some favorite ships, but I also enjoy gen and friendship fic just as much.

I'm not very good at coming up with prompts, and it's hard to get a balance between including proper prompts and having nothing. I tried to include some things that I like/would find interesting about the characters I requested, but feel free to ignore or use that as a rough guideline.

I would think that writing multiple stories would be like reading a multi-fic zine. It's hard to change gears without taking a break in between to change your mindset. Good Luck!

"The appendix. Do you have it?"
