Cisco HostScan, developed by Cisco, is an endpoint posture assessment module used with Cisco Secure Client (formerly AnyConnect) and Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) to help enforce security policies for remote access VPN and network access. Before and during a connection, HostScan evaluates an endpoint’s security posture by checking attributes such as operating system and patch level, antivirus and anti-malware status, personal firewall presence, disk encryption, running processes, and custom registry or file checks. It shares these results with ASA Dynamic Access Policies (DAP) or Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) so administrators can allow, restrict, or quarantine access based on compliance.
Designed to reduce risk and strengthen zero-trust access control, HostScan supports pre-connect checks, periodic reassessment, and optional user remediation prompts. It can be deployed automatically as part of the VPN connection experience and is available for major desktop platforms, including Windows, macOS, and Linux. The result is a more secure, policy-driven connection that helps ensure only trusted, compliant devices reach sensitive resources.
