TV
Well Psych is supposed to be just a happy fun entertaining show but the last two episodes have made me cry. Sigh.

I'm still watching Doctor Who but I don't really care about it. It's there, whatever, I don't have any thoughts on it.

I watched all of Warehouse 13 in one go last year just in time for it to hit a 6 or 7 month hiatus, so I don't actually know what to think about it starting up again next week. It's sorta like, wait, there's more? Really? Huh. I do want to see more, though.

I have magical timing like that with TV shows, I think. I discovered that the 22 episodes of Switched At Birth I watched last summer were not all of S1, because S1 was 30 episodes, for some insane reason, so I finished that and watched the first 10 eps of S2... just in time for them to go on hiatus. I was like, oh, now I am caught up, when is the next episode? Oh, not for a couple months? Really? Okay.

I guess I'm also sorta watching Bones because my mother has it in the DVR but I care about that way way way even less than Doctor Who.

I've been watching CSI Miami streaming on Netflix as I fall asleep (because I am not doing so well with just dark and silence at night lately) and am now into the final season, S10, and I don't know what I'll do once that ends. HGTV streaming is probably better for sleeping, but still. Although EVERYONE in the world has guested on the CSIs, it is constantly like, oh hey, it's so-and-so. But let me just say that the amount of totally illegal search and seizure and police intimidation and brutality keeps notching up and up.

Just these past few weeks I watched all 3 seasons of Lost Girl. It is indeed very cheesy and a little sexploitational but quite entertaining. And oddly enough all Emmanuelle Vaugier's normally annoying traits (bland listless expressions, voice tone that always sounds fake, asymmetrical eyes and eyebrows) all really actually WORK WELL as the Morrigan. It's like they invented a role where her flaws become strengths. It's kinda miraculous.

So I signed up for Graze and have been enjoying the snacks they send me. The food is yummy and also their system hits that perfect Venn diagram overlap sweet spot between OCD list-making/rating and exciting randomness for me.

Anyhow, I have an invite code, if anyone wants to try it out. First box is free. Valid only in the continental USA.

I signed up for comics_bb. We'll see if I finish anything. Such Shaping Fantasies sadly isn't eligible since I've posted parts of it public already, so I need to decide what else to focus on (and keep going with that anyway). I'm trying to figure out what is most likely to get an artist: Lex/Kon, girl-Kon, or multiple Kons.

I'm also thinking of doing another round of sv_remix. Because. It would be fun. If other people would play.

On Saturday I told some people my story of why I have never read Les Misérables.

My parents gave me the book for Christmas when I was nine. I tried to start reading it. I decided it was too long and boring. I went to read something else.

Given that I basically will read any words placed in front of my eyes and am almost entirely incapable of deliberately stopping reading what I start, and this tendency was even more pronounced when I was a kid, in order to read the book now I would have to overcome the fact that it is labeled in my brain as the most boring book ever, SEARED INTO MY MEMORY as pretty much the only time in my entire life that I ever put a book down for being too long and boring.

I have two other childhood memories of not finishing a book. I have this vague idea that I was reading The Once And Future King and then at some point dropped it down a hill and lost my place and never bothered to find that again (this is a very odd memory and I'm not entirely sure it's true; the book-dropping is clear in my head but I can neither confirm nor deny whether the book was ever finished being read for real). The other concerns The Silmarillion, which I read once at about age nine and then tried to read again a year or two later. The second time around I decided the book was so boring that I had no idea how I'd managed to make it through the first time.

You can tell from the fact that these three memories have stuck with me all my life exactly how RARE it was for me to stop reading something when I was a kid. And that is why I think I will never be able to overcome the negative conditioning and have anything to do with Les Mis.

The consensus response of the group was, "but WHY would your parents give that book TO A NINE YEAR OLD KID?" *shrug* Don't ask me, ask them.

Which is more like to take me 20 years.

Day 10 - A vid that makes you laugh

Bitches by Otaku Vengeance - Pokemon - Bitches love Pikachu. I know nothing about nothing about nothing about Pokemon, but this is one of the first vids I ever saw, and it's still hilarious.

Day 11 - An anime/animated vid you love

Some of the first Shoujo Kakumei Utena vids I saw were by Kestrel, and are still among my faves, mostly Peace & Love, Ohtori (violence), Everybody Wants To Rule Ohtori (the Black Rose Saga), and Never Meant To Bishounen (Touga/Saionji).

But if you're looking for Utena/Anthy storyline, then two great vids that go great together are Roseate Nocturne by Tenjou and Himemiya (Anthy POV) and Torn by Maison Otaku (Utena POV). Both very tragic and yet hopeful. (They make me cry every time.)

Hmmm, all the old stuff has such low-res footage. It would be great to find more new vids using the lovely new DVD footage. Also, WHY did I only just learn about the ancient Japanese burial sites called kofun? Yes, that is clearly what Ohtori is.

Also I wish strangefandom would run another round. I want them to do SKU. Because... swords coming out of people's chests! Everyone is sleeping together and roses and coffins and eggs and upsidedown castles in the air and all the cracky weird visuals over the amazing story. Girls helping each other to save themselves. Eternity. Loss. Love. Their hearts, literally, their hearts.

Apparently they randomly deleted two of the comms I mod that weren't very active. I don't know when this happened; I know they were purging comms a few years ago but I'm certain I remember making sure that didn't happen to any of mine. :/ And I didn't notice until now because the names are still showing normal on my profile page and in my "work as" dropdown and everything and they never sent me any notification or anything. But when I click the link it redirects both of them to something called thecommunity which is clearly a redirect for all purged comms or something (it's titled [renamed acct]). :/ :/ :( :( grrrrrr

RIP _finder_ and _revolution_.

EDIT: Wait what... Now I click on them and they work! Was this a temporary glitch? A hack? WHAT IS GOING ON???

I am so confused. Why is LJ all broken. But if they weren't deleted that is good!

DÉJÀ EDIT: And gone again, and back again, and... I think LJ is just glitching. :/ (Yeah, glitching hardcore, because when it redirected me to thecommunity it had no entries, but when I click that link now it has loads of entries. And a different creation date and everything.)

I just finished watching it. And it's always funny what fandom osmosis makes me think of a show and how that is sometimes totally wrong.

1. I thought this show was about Richard, Kahlan, and Cara. Cara actually only shows up later. It is about Richard, Kahlan, and Zedd... the old wizard dude no one in fandom ever mentioned. Who knew! (BTW, Kahlan is pronounced with a long A in the first syllable because some guy thought ah means A and ay means I. Whatev fantasy authors.)

2. I hadn't realized that Richard and Kahlan had an OTP Epic Love full of Obstacles because they Must Never Have Sex Ever or Terrible Things Will Happen. Yet they kiss way more than any other pair who Must Never Have Sex Ever.

3. Also somehow fandom made me think the show had an almost textual threesome? Because somehow I got the impression that Kahlan/Cara was also canon? Because I thought they used to know each other and were together before Cara became a Mord'Sith? These things are not true. Le sigh. Who knew! I was a bit disappointed. (Though I liked the characters and their relationships anyway. But still.)

4. There was a vid I'd seen, Doll Parts, which I think I got from strangefandom. I believed it was about Cara. But no. Instead it is about a minor character, Denna, who is introduced earlier, and who is not Cara. She is also not Kahlan's sister Dennee. Do not be confused by similar names or long blonde hair. (I totally stopped trying to understand the naming scheme early on. Like why Jennsen is a girl whose name means son of Jenn. (Also she should have showed up more.))

5. I always do prefer hinky human evil overlords to when people fight the devil. Darken Rahl was a good bad guy. Plus in the first episode I started to wonder if he was secretly Richard's father, so I'm giving myself points for that anyway.

Overall it was fun. Just not what I expected.

I wrote two things for Yuletide.

The Spoiler and the Bat-Girl versus the Mechanical Menaces - Batgirl (DC Comics) - Steph/Cass, G. 1,180 words. An entry from Steph's diary in a steampunk AU. Our heroine is joined by a dashing and mysterious figure while fighting a troop of evil clockwork men. Full of Florid Victoriana. (The recipient mentioned steampunk AU and Jane Austen. I realized after I wrote it that what I was pastiching most was actually probably the girl's diary in To Say Nothing Of The Dog by Connie Willis.)

Rules Of The Hunt - Alien vs. Predator - Alexa Woods, Scar, gen. 276 words. Two beings' thoughts in two moments. (Because I defaulted my recipient got two full stories for two of her prompts that she liked more than what I would have done if I'd been able to finish anything.)

And I got one fic.

each new morning in heaven - by butforthegrace - Archie Comics, Veronica Lodge, teen, 3,650 words. Considering my prompt was all about sleeping around and shenanigans, this is actually a really deep, amazing story about growing up and becoming yourself (and travel). I totally love it. You should go read it.

And one thing I realized while making the prompt and reading the fic... Okay, we all know I love Lex Luthor. And in Primeval: New World my favorite character so far is Ange (with Toby a close second). And I've definitely been thinking of Ange as a Lex type of businesswoman. She's very good at what she does and she's very ruthless in a way but she's also so very human and caring. Toby of course is the scientific genius. And I know this is a type of mine for fictional characters. But then this fic about Veronica and what I said in my prompt details... It made me realize this has been a type of mine for even longer than I had thought.

(And speaking of Canadian Primeval, I was thinking it was going a little slow, and wondering if they had an overarching plot... and then they showed they did! And I am totally looking forward to it! Even if I'm not really into the shipping and no one is Helen Cutter yet. (Speaking of my types. Or like I said, how I quite enjoyed all of S1 of Warehouse 13, and then they introduced HG, and it was, OH THIS THING GOES UP TO ELEVEN.))

Karaoke night last night! People actually only did a minimum of My Chemical Fall Out Panic! At The Boy-Romance Disco. I also learned that a song I'd heard on the radio at the gym is actually by Cobra Starship, which I hadn't realized because I'm behind and haven't yet heard their last two or so albums (and also apparently they've stopped trying to write lyrics?). This place did not have the actual videos to any of the songs but seemed to be playing a string of other unrelated Korean music videos with no sound behind whatever songs we were using. Anyhow, it came up in discussion that there are various vids to various songs that not everyone has seen.

I'm On A Boat - Star Trek reboot. There are actually at least two other vids to versions of this song in this fandom but this one by kiki_miserychic is my favorite.

3 - Fastlane vid by talitha78. I've actually never seen this show and all I know is it has Tiffani Thiessen and two guys and they're all cops and they're in a threesome together but there's also a part where she makes out with some other women and it's hot.

And while we're on all these subjects...

Apple Candy - Star Trek reboot vid by talitha78, Kirk/Uhura/Spock(/Spock Prime/Kirk Prime/the Enterprise/space adventures).

And rivkat for writing fics that sometimes discuss the legal implications of supernatural beings, although I can't think of any specific example stories off the top of my head at the moment.

Apparently Darkover was optioned for TV. Which could be really awesome, as it's right up there with the Master Li books and ElfQuest (which also just got a new movie deal, but no one is holding their breath over that anymore) as something I want to see onscreen*. If done right. That's the big question. And this may not really make it to our screens, but at least such quotes as, "One of the hallmarks of Marion Zimmer Bradley's work is her rethinking and reinvention of gender roles. She was among the first speculative fiction writers to take on gender stereotypes and bend them or turn them topsy-turvy, thereby creating complex and unforgettable characters whose struggles with their own identities, as well as what society expects of them, feel completely modern," make it hopeful these people would do well by the world and stories.

*And Finder, and Inherit The Stars, and Pern (and of course Gilgamesh and Justice League: New Regime).

I was watching some Clex vids yesterday and at once point I was like, "oh, yeah, it's that same scene of Lex and Clark kissing that everyone uses, again." Then I stopped myself and thought, no, wait, it's Lex and Desiree. It's just that everyone does use that clip in everything to be Lex and Clark (and thank you, Smallville, for giving Lex such a consistent type, and using such a nice angle and close-up in that shot). And it's like, if you're making a Clex vid, and you want to indicate Lex and Clark kissing, bam, use that clip after a scene of them staring at each other or hugging, and problem solved.

Except maybe that easy solution has cut down on some creativity?

Because I then remembered a Wincest vid that came out pretty early in the fandom, and I no longer remember what it was called or who it was by, but you know the one. With the kissing vid manip of Sam and Dean, footage of Sam kissing someone and Dean kissing someone melded together so it's them kissing each other.

And I can't think of any Clex vid manips like that. There are loads of image manips that do the same thing, but any vid ones? (Of course now I have the feeling someone is going to point to one, and I'll be like, duh, I've watched that vid a million times, how could I forget it.) But if there aren't, anyone wanna take a crack at it?

shadowplays are figments of their own imaginations
Another little fanfic rant. I read a fic about the main pairing A/B, but the header also said "implied A/C, implied B/C." Well. I think the author might better have called it background or something, since A and B had an entire conversation about how they'd each had sex with C in the past, thought he was hot, and how A was so desperately in love with him (C being A's BFF and work partner), and C had just got married and A was all messed up about it and this was highly relevant to the plotline.

That is not IMPLIED, dear author, that is stated outright in the text, thus being TEXTUAL, ACTUAL, and, for your fic, CANONICAL. Not implied.

(Also I was confused why the author felt it relevant to mention the C stuff in the header, as if that would be what drew me in or kept me away, and yet left out the other pairings that were also mentioned in the fic, such as B's marriage of convenience. (Which I did not mind as a plot point this time, given that it was introduced and explained prior to him and A getting together and they also discussed that.))

And while we're at it, dittocakes on your "implied non-con" warning, which is probably more important to be specific about. That was what I tend to call "references to past non-con" since it happened in the past, not onscreen, but it was not IMPLIED, we are to know for sure from the fic that it actually did happen. Implied involves a certain ambiguity. There was no ambiguity here.
