The Greater China Journal is a fully independent website about the history, culture and politics of the Chinese-speaking world.
I created this website years ago as a passion project, because I felt that the Chinese-speaking world deserved to be understood on a deeper level than is often the case in our current discourse, which focuses heavily on news cycles, trends, or the agenda of politicians in power. I also wanted to create a space that is not beholden to either political or business organizations.
I use the term “Greater China” as a synonym for the Chinese-speaking areas of East Asia and it is in no way intended as an endorsement of a political notion of China as a state. To some, this term is problematic. The truth is I chose it because it was the simplest title I could come up with, as “The Chinese-speaking World Journal” does not really roll off the tongue easily. It is an imperfect name, but it was the best I could find.
I strive to provide intellectually honest, informative and thought-provoking articles written in an academic style. Intellectual honesty is not to be understood as absolute neutrality. Every analysis and interpretation requires an individual perspective.
Rather, it means that I seek to understand history and society instead of crafting narratives that conform to my personal views. Where my personal views and my analysis coincide, it is because I believe that the facts support my conclusions.
