‘There is so much freedom that is not being used.’ This observation was at the core of our Teacher Agency Working Group discussions. Like the characters in J.B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls, we are all implicated in a system of our own making and may be more constrained by fear than by the system itself.
At Sir William Perkins’s School (SWPS), professional development is grounded in a commitment to ‘flourishing staff’, supported by a CPD offer that is both evidence-informed and responsive to individual need. As a school that celebrated its tricentenary in 2025 and is entering a new phase as a co-educational setting, we are conscious that our approach to professional learning must evolve alongside our community.
We are proud to be part of the national Increasing Diversity in Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Project, a four-year initiative funded by Mission 44 in partnership with the Chartered College of Teaching, Being Luminary and the Chiltern Learning Trust. The project focuses on dismantling systemic barriers faced by Beginning Teachers from Global Majority Heritage backgrounds, from application through to qualification.
On Friday, 15 May 2026, I was invited by Mission 44 to join a special roundtable discussion alongside other education partners and young people at Oasis Academy South Bank, winner of the TES 2025 Secondary School of the Year award. I have previously attended events on behalf of our project partners, but what made this occasion even more special was that it was chaired by Mission 44 CEO Jason Arthur and attended by Mission 44 founder Sir Lewis Hamilton!

The proportion of heads who say they are ‘mostly’ or ‘sometimes sinking’ range from nearly a third in Scotland (30%), to around one in five in England (22%) and Northern Ireland (19%). Common drivers of unsustainability include: poor work-life balance and unreasonable workloads; issues with staff; finance and resource constraints; and SEND, behaviour and inclusion challenges. But not all leaders are in crisis – indeed, several interviewees described headship as “the best job in the world”. The research identifies what sustains leaders and the features of thriving leadership. Paradoxically, for many leaders, the fact that the job is tough is what makes it so rewarding, meaning that leaders can be thriving and sinking at the same time, or, perhaps more accurately, thriving one day or one week, but sinking the next. This webinar explores these findings and the issues they highlight, asking what can be done to make leadership more sustainable across the UK?
