WHAT IS A COP?

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP) is the leading international event on climate change, bringing together global leaders, businesses, organizations and experts to discuss solutions to help curb global warming. Held annually by the UN, COP is essential for sustainable development, implementing the Paris Agreement, setting new climate goals and promoting the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Each issue addresses crucial sustainability issues such as climate finance and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, shaping global sustainability policies.

PART OF THE CLIMATE COPS SINCE 1998

For over 27 years, we have been mobilizing the business sector at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, and COP30 will be no different.

118 COMPANIES

are already part of the change.

THE LEGACIES OF COP29 FOR COP30

COP29, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 2024, was an important milestone for advancing issues such as the global carbon market and climate finance. However, crucial issues remained pending, making COP30 a decisive step to consolidate policies and accelerate negotiations towards more effective solutions.

CEBDS was present at COP29 with a delegation from the Brazilian private sector, promoting panels, actively participating in discussions and closely following all the debates that will be taken to COP30.

DISCOVER OUR JOURNEY TOWARDS COP30

A COP is not built overnight. It is a journey that involves a series of themes, events and actions over the years, and over several editions of COPs. CEBDS is present at each of these stages.

ADVANCEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF A GLOBAL MARKET

Following the agreement that finalized political negotiations around Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which provides for mechanisms for trading emissions mitigation results, the process that culminates in COP30 will be marked by the consolidation of technical decisions that enable the first transactions within the system.

In Brazil, CEBDS played a leading role in the approval of Law 15042/2024, which created the Brazilian Emissions Trading System (SBCE). In 2025, we will continue working to implement the system, which will be crucial for Brazil's insertion in the future global market.

NDCs WILL BE ONE OF THE CENTRAL THEMES OF COP30

A central part of the Paris Agreement, updates to each country's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) must be submitted by mid-2025. Although the level of ambition of the new targets is not up for discussion, the implementation of these objectives is expected to be a central theme of COP30.

In 2024, CEBDS, together with international business coalitions, launched a Call to Action for Climate Targets that not only represent an increase in ambition, but also contain clear means of implementation and the participation of the private sector. In 2025, we will continue working to establish sectoral targets for mitigating emissions.

CLIMATE FINANCING
FEATURED

The agreement on the New Collective Quantified Target (NCQG) for Climate Finance provided a path to increase the contribution established during COP29. To achieve this possibility, resources earmarked for climate finance must rely on alternative sources of incentive, which may include the participation of the private sector and non-governmental actors.

At CEBDS, the sustainable finance agenda encompasses the training and qualification of our associates to adapt to regulations and access financing, as well as the creation of opportunities for connection and co-construction between the private sector and financing entities.

COP30 WILL SPOTLIGHT SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

Regenerative agriculture is an innovative and sustainable approach to agricultural production that goes beyond traditional sustainability practices and focuses on the regeneration and revitalization of agricultural ecosystems, including soil health, biodiversity, water management, and climate resilience. This new model of agricultural production will be highlighted at COP 30 for uniting production and conservation. Regenerative agriculture has the potential to transform the Brazilian agricultural sector, placing the country at the forefront of a new era of sustainable, low-carbon, regenerative, and fair production.

At CEBDS, this topic has been addressed by CT Sistemas Agroalimentares, which carries out research, studies, and develops public policy proposals to advance the implementation of Regenerative Agriculture in Brazil.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP) is the leading international event on climate change, bringing together global leaders, businesses, organizations and experts to discuss solutions to help curb global warming. Held annually by the UN, COP is essential for sustainable development, implementing the Paris Agreement, setting new climate goals and promoting the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Each issue addresses crucial sustainability topics such as climate finance and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, shaping global sustainability policies.

In addition to strategic debates, the COP is a space for cooperation between countries, public and private sectors, encouraging practical actions to address the climate crisis. Commitments such as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the creation of carbon markets are some of the measures discussed. The relevance of the COP lies in its role of accelerating the sustainable development agenda and ensuring global engagement to build a greener and more resilient future, and in international integration towards a common goal.

In 2025, the 30th Conference of the Parties will be held in Brazil, in the capital of Pará, Belém, from November 10 to November 21, 2025. This will be the first time that Brazil will host the event, highlighting the importance of the Amazon in combating global warming and promoting a sustainable climate agenda. The choice is a symbol of the Amazon region's leading role in advancing the global sustainable agenda.

A COP30, which will take place in Belém, Pará, will place the Amazon at the center of global discussions on climate change. As the world's largest tropical biome, its preservation is essential to combating global warming and ensure the balance of the planetary ecosystem. Debates on bioeconomy, combating illegal deforestation and financing for sustainable projects in the region promise to be the highlights of the event. In addition, the role of local communities and indigenous peoples will be widely discussed, reinforcing the importance of climate justice to ensure that climate solutions are inclusive and respect the rights of traditional peoples.

Another crucial topic will be the energy transition, focusing on expanding the use of renewable energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. COP30 will seek to align global efforts to accelerate this shift, especially in developing countries, which face structural challenges in adopting a model of low carbon economy. With a special focus on the integration of sustainability and social justice, the conference will be a milestone in defining more equitable and effective paths to tackling the climate crisis.

COP30 represents a unique opportunity for Brazil to consolidate its position as a protagonist in the global climate agenda. With the Amazon at the center of the debates, the country will be able to highlight initiatives to preserve the biome, promote the bioeconomy and attract investments that drive sustainable projects. The event is a chance to reinforce Brazil's leadership on issues such as combating deforestation and strengthening climate justice, ensuring that the proposed solutions are inclusive and respectful of local communities.

Brazil still has the chance to advance in the energy transition, consolidating its position as a reference in the use of renewable energy. With its vast capacity to generate solar, wind and hydroelectric energy, the country can attract partnerships and investments that accelerate the adoption of a low-carbon economy. Holding the event on Brazilian soil positions the country as a regional leader, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability and its ability to foster innovative solutions to address the global climate crisis.

BIOECONOMY WILL BE A KEY POINT AT COP30

The bioeconomy will be crucial at COP30. The topic is a strategic opportunity for Brazil to unite environmental preservation and economic development, taking advantage of the wealth of its biomes, especially the Amazon, to generate sustainable solutions.

CEBDS leads the consortium that provides technical support for the development of the National Sociobioeconomy Plan, within the scope of the National Strategy, in collaboration with other institutions. The initiative has financial support from UKPact.

THE AMAZON AS A PROTAGONIST OF COP30

The Amazon will be the center of attention at COP30. With 10% of the planet's biodiversity and a crucial role in carbon capture, the biome will be a protagonist, both as a topic of debate and as a strategic setting for the discussions that will arise throughout the event, hosted in Belém.

Since 1997, CEBDS has defended the forest through initiatives such as the Business Movement for the Amazon and the Amazon Working Group, seeking to integrate sustainable solutions and promote dialogue between economic development and environmental preservation.

HOT TOPIC, SbN WILL BE ON THE AGENDA AT COP30

Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) are gaining prominence for offering scalable and affordable solutions that combine environmental preservation and carbon emission reduction. They will be a prominent theme at COP30.

CEBDS has been dedicated to promoting NBS through publications and events, supporting the private sector to adopt innovative and sustainable practices for a low-carbon economy.
