Activate Communities Through Initiative, Vision, and Empowerment (ACTIVE)
Social Justice Conversations & Intersectional Movements is the Activate Communities Through Initiative, Vision, and Empowerment (ACTIVE) course implemented by the Cross-Cultural Center and facilitated by the Director. This is one-quarter course is designed around the themes of, social justice, community building, mobilization, and healing. The ACTIVE cohort is also trained to facilitate social justice themed workshops for the community. The first half of the quarter is an introduction to social justice concepts and systems they currently experience in higher education. The second half focuses on identifying a problem, researching, and designing an interactive workshop that they will facilitate in front of a group of their peers.
Students may audit the course or earn credit by registering in the Spring/Summer for the Fall Quarter.
By participating in this course, students will:
- Develop an awareness and sensitivity to one another’s differences with regards to experiences, thoughts, and points of view.
- Examine individual biases and prejudices in order to increase awareness of self and other identities/communities.
- Cultivate and hone abilities to facilitate critical discussions, communicate cross-culturally, and create educational environments for others.
- Organize and create a course project such as a workshop or presentation around a social justice related topic.
- Learn how to research and examine a problem of their choosing and design a facilitator guide.
- Practice facilitating in a front of a group of peers.
- Develop a social lens on campus by exploring social justice advocacy in spaces beyond the classroom.
