Although many companies enter strategic alliances with specific learning objectives, these goals are often not realized. Based on a study of North American-Japanese joint venture, this article analyzes the question of why some firms are more effective than others on the use of alliance learning opportunities and develops a framework for the learning alliance. The frame includes knowledge management process – a series of organizational measures, which create the basis for access to and use of knowledge alliance – and facilitating factors – the conditions that foster a favorable climate for an effective alliance knowledge management. The main obstacle to successful learning of alliances is a failure to necessary access to perform the specific organizational processes to assimilate and disseminate knowledge alliance.
