The Evia Wildfire Community Resilience Initiative represents a groundbreaking effort to strengthen disaster risk reduction (DRR) capacities in northern Evia, a region deeply affected by the devastating wildfires of recent years. Implemented by Caritas Hellas, in collaboration with Caritas Athens and funded by CRS, this pilot program adopts an innovative, community-led approach to enhance resilience and preparedness among local communities. By empowering individuals and stakeholders, this initiative aims to establish a sustainable model of disaster risk management that can be replicated in other vulnerable areas across Greece.
Over the course of a year, from October 2024 to September 2025, the program will conduct targeted assessments, capacity-building activities, and participatory planning workshops. Key components include the establishment of Community Disaster Management Committees, the development of localized emergency preparedness plans, and the delivery of training on cutting-edge methodologies such as Community-Led Disaster Risk Management (CLDRM+). Through these actions, the program seeks to bridge gaps in disaster management systems and ensure the inclusion of all community members, particularly vulnerable groups, in shaping their own safety and resilience.
Northern Evia was selected for this initiative not only due to its history of wildfires but also because of the socio-economic vulnerabilities of its communities, including an aging population, geographic isolation, and limited infrastructure. The program leverages the region’s existing community spirit and knowledge while introducing structured tools and practices to mitigate risks effectively. It also fosters collaboration between local authorities, public agencies, civil society, and the private sector, ensuring a comprehensive and coordinated response to future crises.
The Evia Wildfire Community Resilience Initiative embodies the principles of solidarity, empowerment, and sustainable development. By prioritizing knowledge transfer and community ownership, Caritas Hellas aims to transform disaster management from a top-down system into an inclusive process that places communities at the forefront of their safety. This program not only addresses immediate risks but also builds long-term capacity for resilience, setting a new benchmark for disaster risk management in Greece.
Through this initiative, Caritas Hellas reaffirms its commitment to supporting communities in crisis, while generating valuable insights and methodologies that can contribute to a national framework for disaster preparedness and response. Together, we aim to ensure that no one is left behind when disaster strikes.
