Caliber Magazine

Applications for Spring 2016 are due February 5, 2016 at 11:59 pm. Info sessions will be held January 26, 2015 and February 2, 2015 at 8pm in 2 Evans. Applications are available as a Google form.

Thank you for your interest in joining Caliber Magazine, UC Berkeley’s Everything Magazine! We are a group of fun, creative and enthusiastic students who take pride in producing the highest quality magazine at Cal. We do not limit ourselves to any topic or field; we always seek to diversify and explore our coverage, be it entertainment, lifestyle, music, technology, fashion, shopping, campus features and more. Before we get started with the application, we’d like you to know a few things.

The Caliber team is split into Staff Members and Board Members. Board members lead specific functions of the magazine and are responsible for making strategic decisions. Staff members are the content providers who work collaboratively to produce, market, and distribute the magazine.

Please note the following before submitting an application:

  • Staff Members must be available from 8-9pm on Tuesdays and Board Members from 7-9pm on Tuesdays for weekly mandatory meetings.
  • Be available to table/flyer/volunteer for one hour every week.
  • Submit all required deliverables by the posted deadline.
  • Participate in all publicity campaigns held by Caliber Magazine.

Positions Available

Account Executives

  • Do full sales cycles: researching, cold-calling, meeting with prospects, selling advertisements, maintaining these clients, communicating ad specs to the Heads of Business and Vice-President
  • Organize all ad specifications, changes, and designs, and make sure clients are happy with their ad
  • Maintains long-term relationship with businesses
  • Obtain checks from businesses before deadline

Online Writers

  • Write 1 blog post weekly
  • Be available for weekly one-on-one meetings with your Online Content Manager
  • Able to be “on-call” for on-campus and newsworthy events (for example, protests, movie premieres/reviews, a fireman saving a cat from a tree)
  • Interested in current events

Print Writers

  • Write 1-2 articles for our semesterly print magazine
  • Be available for weekly one-on-one meetings with the Editor-in-Chief

Web Designers

  • Provide general assistance to the Webmaster
  • Must be familiar with WordPress and web-based hosting systems (such as Hostmonster)
  • Has coding skills
  • Able to be “on-call” for unexpected technical issues

Layout Designers

  • Must be familiar with Adobe InDesign
  • Design layouts for the print magazine

Editorial Assistant

  • Help contact boutiques for pull requests
  • Be present during the photo shoot for help with camera equipment
  • Offer input for photo shoot ideas, including styling, makeup, location, etc.

Photographers

  • Shoot photos for several articles in our semesterly print magazine
  • Able to be “on-call” for on-campus and newsworthy events that need immediate photo coverage
  • Able to work with 1-2 online writers to capture photos for their weekly articles

Marketing Representatives

  • Proficient in social media
  • Work to expand Caliber’s social media presence
  • Manage publicity efforts for the magazine and online content
  • Brainstorm innovative ways to use online/multimedia resources for promotion
