About BWEF

Broward Women’s Emergency Fund (BWEF) was founded in August 2003 by a group of like-minded women who wanted to provide financial support for abortion care to the Broward County, Florida community. We believe that the right to choose abortion is meaningless without access to safe, legal abortion services.

Since inception, BWEF has opposed all efforts to restrict abortion rights and our organization has experienced many changes, most notably due to the recent US Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in June 2022, which reinforced the importance of the work that is done by local abortion funds. Our support for abortion care has expanded outside Florida, partnering with other abortion funds to provide support where and when it’s needed most.

Several years ago, BWEF became an affiliate of the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF), a District of Columbia nonprofit corporation determined to build a world where all reproductive options are valued, accessible and stigma-free. As one of 100 independent abortion funds within the NNAF network, we remain committed to fighting for access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare, including abortion care, for all women, girls and pregnant folks, regardless of income, race, age, disability, gender identity or immigration status.

Our Board of Directors, volunteers and donors recognize the work continues and support is needed now, more than ever.
