Plan, Provide, Train
Roofing When Quality and Safety Matter
No matter the season, roofers encounter
many hazards on the job,
including working at heights and
from ladders, power tools, electricity,
noise, hazardous substances, and extreme
temperatures.
Unless these hazards are controlled by
the employer, roofers risk serious injury,
illness and death. To protect workers on
roofing jobs, OSHA requires employers
to identify the hazards present and take
steps to address them.
Falls remain the leading cause of
death in the construction industry. In
2023, there were 421 fatal falls to a lower
level, almost 39 percent of 1,075 construction
fatalities, according to the Bureau
of Labor Statistics. These deaths
are preventable. Falls from roofs accounted
for nearly one third of the fall
deaths during that period.
Falls can be prevented and lives can
be saved through three simple steps:
“Plan, Provide and Train.” See OSHA’s Fall Prevention Campaign web page for resources to help prevent falls (www.osha.gov/stopfalls).
OSHA suggests the following fall protection strategies for roofing operations. Full story »
