Poetry of Witness—A Generative Poetry Workshop
May 7, 14, 21, 28 & June 4
Thursdays from 7-9PM
Online Workshop
5 Sessions
$75
Presenter: Ralph Pennel
What does it mean to be a witness? To stand in witness? To bear witness? From her groundbreaking anthology Against Forgetting, Carolyn Forche defines poetry of witness as work that is situated in the social sphere, in a space between the personal and political. It is work that attempts to discover and lay claim to the truth against forces of erasure. In this course we will discuss and create witness poems on ecology/the environment, identity, art, politics, history, and more. In our attempts to further understand and define what it means to witness, we will read work from poets such as Joy Harjo, Natasha Trethewey, Adreinne Rich, Carolyn Forche, Mosab Abu Toha, Leah Umansky, Michael Kleber Diggs, Danez Smith, Naomi Shihab Nye, and others. This class is open to all, to anyone who feels compelled to reclaim these spaces and add their voice to the chorus.
