Review: His Second-Chance Duchess by Regina Scott

What fun it was to read this second chance romance set in Regency times. Hugh and Georgie very clearly still had feelings for each other and it was fun to see the various members of the current Duke’s household and staff attempt to matchmake them!

However, Hugh and Georgie had things to work through and weights that they both carried that they needed to learn to be free from before they could hope to finally find love together again. I really liked the way Georgie and Hugh’s values lined up with each other and the way they cared for those in need. They were such a good match for each other.

There was also a sweet love story between a maid and a footman that was a great addition to everything that was going on in the book.

ABOUT THE BOOK

A duchess in mourning deserves a second chance at loveSweet-natured Georgina, Dowager Duchess of Tyneham, was blessed to fall in love twice, once with an impoverished clergyman who chose career over her and once to her late husband, the duke. Better to hide her broken heart behind good works and a well placed lace-edged handkerchief. That is, until the new duke appoints a vicar to the village church, and Georgie comes face to face with her former love.

Raised in a London orphanage and risen to his current position by the kindness of patrons, Hugh Caddington knew long ago he had little to offer the pretty Georgie. Now she’s a duchess, with everything she might want at her fingertips. What’s a poor country vicar to do except show her every kindness and courtesy even as their former love rekindles?

As a thief plagues the little village, loyalties are tested, but nothing stands in the way of the duke and his matchmaking servants. Can Hugh turn Georgie’s mourning into dancing, at their own wedding?

“I LOVE to read Regina Scott’s books. They always feel comfortable. I honestly don’t know how else to convey how ‘at home’ I feel when reading what she’s written.” – Hott Book Reviews

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Regina Scott started writing novels in the third grade. Thankfully for literature as we know it, she didn’t actually sell her first Regency romance novel until she had learned a bit more about writing such as vocabulary, sentence structure, and plot. After numerous short stories and articles in magazines and trade journals, she got serious about her novel writing. The Regency romance The Unflappable Miss Fairchild was her first novel to be published (March 1998). In 2011, she was delighted to move into Christian romance with the publication of The Irresistible Earl. October 2019 marked her debut for prestigious publisher Revell. Her novels have been translated into Dutch, German, Italian, and Portuguese; and a large number have been issued in hardcover, large print editions.

Her books have won praise and awards from industry professionals and readers alike. She has twice won the prestigious RT Book Reviews Reviewer’s Choice award for best historical Christian romance of its type, for The Heiress’s Homecoming in 2013 and Would-Be Wilderness Wife in 2015. Booklist, the magazine of the American Library Association, named her book, A Distance Too Grand, one of the top ten romances of 2019. Never Doubt a Duke, the first book in her bestselling Fortune’s Brides series, was picked by staffers at Hope by the Book as one of the best reads of 2018. And, in 2022, she hit the Publisher’s Weekly Bestseller List in the Religious category for a reprint of Would-Be Wilderness Wife.

Regina Scott and her husband are the parents of two grown sons. They reside in the Puget Sound area of Washington State on the way to Mt. Rainier. Regina Scott is a graduate of the University of Washington. She comes by her writing talent naturally–both her parents were excellent writers in their vocations as teacher and electrical technician. Her mother envisioned the plot for A Match for Mother the novella, which was written as a tribute to her.

Regina Scott has learned to fence, driven four-in-hand, dressed as a Regency dandy, and sailed on a tall ship, all in the name of research, of course. Her extensive historical, fantasy, and science fiction costume collection takes up the entire closet in her office.

Review: Lassos and Lace by Jody Hedlund

What a delightful story! I loved the emotional journey that Max and Emberly took in this novel. Did their relationship develop quickly? Absolutely! And that supports one of the themes in this series, which is the McQuaid legacy of falling into a fast, furious, and forever love. But one of the great things in this story was seeing the way these two related to each other from the beginning as they met, to then exploring Healing Springs Ranch together and beginning to connect as friends who shared deeply with each other, and finally allowing themselves to recognize their feelings as much more than friendship. But, of course, there was also the pesky problem of Max being a secret prince. Yep, I enjoyed this story so much and loved the way the emotions ramped up toward the end of the book. And, the epilogue was so sweet! Loved it!

ABOUT THE BOOK

The lone girl of the family doesn’t think the McQuaid legacy of love can be hers. But is it within her reach after all?

As the event manager for Healing Springs Ranch, Emberly McQuaid works hard to prove her worth to her family. When an international banking group arrives at the ranch and her best personal concierge falls ill, Emberly has no choice but to step in and assist their most illustrious guest, the young and handsome CEO, Max Berg.

During his stay at the ranch, Prince Max is keeping his royalty a secret, hoping to escape the paparazzi along with the increasing pressure to marry a duchess by his birthday. He resists telling Emberly about his heritage because he likes that she doesn’t try to impress him. Even though he’s a workaholic, Max finds himself setting aside his duties to spend time with the beautiful redhead.

Feelings quickly escalate between the two, but they know a relationship can’t go anywhere. When they get stranded together in a mountain cabin, it’s all too easy to let the emotion of their time together sweep them away. But will they be able to overcome the obstacles that stand between them and find a way to be together?

* The inspirational themes in this book are light, and the romance is the primary focus. While the romance is sizzling and the kisses swoony, both the language and physical attraction are clean and wholesome.

Audio Book Review: Ambush by Colleen Coble

This captivating romantic suspense kept me on my toes, trying to figure out who was behind all of the mayhem at the animal sanctuary. I loved that this was a second chance romance for Paradise and Blake. These two characters had some past hurts to learn to get beyond and regrets that definitely weighed them down. But I loved how devoted Blake was to Paradise and the way they reconnected and worked through the past trauma. This story had a great faith message in it, along with a sweet faith journey for Paradise. As the story concluded, one thread of the mystery was solved while another remained to be further explored in the future stories in the series. This novel was enjoyable to listen to as an audiobook and I thought that the narrator did a good job with the voices.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The first book in the riveting new series from USA TODAY bestselling author Colleen Coble, where a young woman will do anything to uncover the truth of her parents’ murder–even work alongside the man who once broke her heart.

Paradise Alden’s childhood in Nova Cambridge, Alabama, was idyllic until the night her parents were murdered. Since then, life has left her scarred. The abuse she suffered in the foster care system, her first love’s betrayal, and the jaguar attack that nearly destroyed her career have led to an unshakable distrust–in men, in God, and maybe in even in herself.

After fifteen years, returning to her hometown is a last resort to finding her life again. She’s hoping the wildlife refuge where she’s accepted a veterinarian job will be the perfect place to heal from her recent traumas and unlock her memories about the night her parents died. But the day she arrives at The Sanctuary, a body is discovered on the grounds. And soon, a series of deadly events threatens not only her future, but the man who, despite all odds, still makes her pulse stutter. Arson, a shooting, a break-in, and multiple instances of animals being freed from their enclosures all point back to him, but Paradise knows Blake Lawson isn’t responsible. Not the man who has been helping his mother manage The Sanctuary these past six months and care for his stepbrothers in the wake of their father’s death . . . even if his betrayal years ago cost her everything.

Someone dangerous is lurking beneath the town’s moss-draped trees, and Paradise refuses to let another murderer disappear into the shadows.

Audio Book Review: Chess Not Checkers by Annah Conwell

This sweet, clean romcom was a delight to listen to! The narrators really did a great job with the voices and it will be going on my list of “comfort” listens, which are audio books that I reach for when I need something I can just relax and enjoy listening to.

I loved the way Shepherd and Jasmine went from rivals (definitely how she viewed him) to friends to falling in love. I also appreciated the way Jasmine and Shepherd’s friendship and eventual relationship developed. It felt very natural to me. They did such a good job of communicating with each other and then truly supporting each other.

Their story emphasized the importance of knowing that you are loved and cared for simply because you are you and that it should not in any way be tied to accomplishments or a feeling of needing to repay what has been given to you. I loved that Shepherd and Jasmine found that true devotion in each other, while also growing closer to their specific family members who loved them for who they were and not for what they could accomplish. Jasmine also hit the jackpot in amazing roommates! I am looking forward to reading all of their stories, too.

(5 stars)

I received a complimentary copy of this audio book, but I also purchased my own ebook copy. All opinions are my own.

Review: The Rancher’s Reckoning by Victoria Bylin

This slow burn story of two people thrown together after a tragedy captivated me! I loved seeing the way Caleb grew throughout the story. He had endured such heartache in his past and was gruff and rude to Elsa at the beginning of the story. However, a bit of his true nature peeked out as he cared for her when she was deathly ill.

I couldn’t help but like both Elsa and Caleb and found their growing romantic feelings for each other so sweet. I appreciated how they communicated and talked all kinds of things through in this story. They were true adults, working alongside each other while falling in love. They both had reasons to be scared to trust their hearts to someone new and that was something they both had to work through.

This story had a great setting, too, out in rugged New Mexico. The author did a good job of creating an isolated atmosphere out at Caleb’s cabin, where Caleb and Elsa began to grow close while also fearing that the man who killed Elsa’s late husband would show up and harm them, as well.

Audio Book Review: Track of Courage by Susan May Warren

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audio book for Track of Courage. The narrator did a very good job and kept me eagerly listening to find out what would happen to Keely, Dawson, and Dawson’s dog, Caspian.

I have read a lot of Susan May Warren’s books, so I recognized the names of many of the side characters in this story. But even though I may have missed a book here or there, I didn’t have any trouble jumping into this story and following along.

I enjoyed the way the romantic connection built between Keeley and Dawson and appreciated that they shared their thoughts and feelings with each other with good communication, for the most part. And even when some things went sideways toward the end of the book, these two were able to admit that they should have handled things better and were adults about how they moved forward.

This story has lots of action and danger, a solid faith message, and a nice romantic thread, as well.

(4.5 stars)

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Audio Book Review: Hearts on the Fly by Toni Shiloh

I loved this book, these characters, and their faith journey! And listening to it on audio brought it to life in a beautiful way.

I was a little nervous at first with how controlling and angry Val’s sister, Jackie was. So I knew there was going to be a big reckoning at some point. But I loved the way the author ended up handling all of these complicated family dynamics.

But, of course, what I loved most about this story was the beautiful journey Val and Jabari took as they became friends and then grew into more. It was hard to see Jabari suffer as he lost most of his eyesight, but it was uplifting to see how Val’s support and friendship through it all worked on his heart to help guide him to God. These two also had excellent communication with each other. I loved the way they were there for each other.

This was such a fun audio book to listen to! I’m looking forward to reading Val’s sister, Fran’s, story when it releases.

(5 stars)

ABOUT THE BOOK

Jabari Hall has spent his entire life chasing victory on ice–but one devastating hit leaves him benched, not just from hockey, but from the future he thought he had. Now, as he struggles with deteriorating eyesight, his well-meaning teammates set him up on a date, hoping it will cheer him up–only the date they choose is none other than Val Elliott, his ex’s sister.

Val never expected to be sitting across from Jabari, especially after the way he broke her sister’s heart. But when Jabari opens up about his diagnosis, Val’s guarded heart softens, and she offers him a listening ear out of compassion. What begins as a simple friendship quickly turns into something more.

As Jabari navigates life off the ice and searches for a new purpose, he’s drawn to Val in ways he didn’t expect. With her loyalty to her family on the line and Jabari searching for faith and a new purpose, can they make it to the goal together, or will their hearts wind up in the penalty box?

My Review:

This was a sweet story with a hint of a reunion romance to it, too. I liked seeing the way Ryder and Kendall gravitated toward one another when circumstances brought them both back to this small town. But Ryder had been very hurt by the actions of his ex-wife and that affected him throughout most of the story. He struggled to trust that Kendall would ever choose him and his son over getting her career back.

Kendall was such a kind and caring person. It was fun to read about how good she was with with Ryder’s son as well as the way she cared for Ryder’s mother as she was going through cancer treatments.

This was a nice addition to the Legacy Ranch series, but you can easily enjoy it on its own, as well.

Review: Long Trail Home by Lacy Williams

Long Trail Home is a wonderful conclusion to the Wagon Train Matches series. This is a series that I think really benefits from being read in order to get the full understanding of all that happens on the trail.

Belle and Coop were the underdogs for much of the series and it was nice to see things finally work out for them. Their happiness together was hard fought. I loved how Coop was so patient and kind with Belle, which ended up helping her to see what a good man he was. And any time Belle was in danger, Coop did whatever he had to in order to keep her safe.

It was hard to see how much Leo’s anger had caused a bitterness to grow in him toward his brother, Coop. But it made it all the sweeter when Leo’s eyes were opened to the changes Coop had made in his life as well as Leo finally being open to seeing Coop as someone who God loved deeply.

This story had a very good faith arc as both Belle and Coop learned about how God viewed them and the love he had for them.

Review: A Second Chance for a Dancer by Carolyn Miller

This was a wonderful second chance at love story! Both Poppy and Jake regret the things that happened in their brief relationship and breakup from three years earlier. Poppy, especially, carries a lot of anger, which she slowly learns to let go of as the story progresses.

One of the things I loved about this story was the way both Poppy and Jake eventually listened to the advice given by family regarding how God sees them. Learning to forgive themselves and each other, while also taking the time to reconnect with God and listen to His guidance put them on the right track.

I liked how patient Jake was toward Poppy as he reached out for forgiveness. Their whole story was so captivating and I ended up reading this book very quickly because I kept wanting to know what was going to happen next!

A Second Chance for a Dancer is part of a series and also has connections to some of the author’s other books. However, it can easily be enjoyed on its own if you haven’t read any of the other stories.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Poppy James is on the brink of attaining national fame, just like her friend and fellow dancer Bailey Donovan, when a blast from the past leads to a devastating injury. Now, instead of applause and acclaim, she’s tucked away in the confines of Three Creek Ranch, struggling to come to terms with a very different future. Who is she when she can no longer do what always gave her purpose?

Jake Guillemette is used to being overshadowed by his NHL-playing younger brother. He’s made peace with that—mostly—after an encounter several years ago showed him that he really shouldn’t try to act like someone he’s not, as that only leads to heartache and regrets.

When a job opportunity leads him to start afresh somewhere new, he never thought he’d run into the person who made him second-guess everything, but who ultimately led him to become a better man.
Horrified, Poppy is desperate to keep their past a secret, and it takes some time to learn to trust this different version of the man she’s long loved to loathe.

Can Jake win her trust and prove he’s changed? And will Poppy learn to trust God with all her future?
