Welcome to the website of

The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research (BRIMR)

an independent non-profit organization founded in 2006

This site provides access to two unique BRIMR datasets:

  • Authoritative annual rankings of NIH funding to individual researchers and academic institutions; and
  • A comprehensive list of the chemical, pharmacological, and clinical characteristics of all protein-kinase inhibitor drugs approved by the FDA.

We are proud to make these data available as resources for the scientific community.

Status

BRIMR is delighted to present its 2025 analysis of NIH awards. For a comprehensive analysis of NIH support to institutions, schools, departments, and investigators, we invite you to explore our newly-released BRIMR rankings for the 2025 federal fiscal year, which ended on 30 September 2025. We are grateful to the more than 60 organizations and individuals whose suggestions during the public comment period helped ensure the accuracy of these results.

Some notable findings include:

  • Notwithstanding the well-publicized tumult of the past year, NIH reported that its total dollar disbursements to U.S. medical schools increased by $104 million (0.5%) in fiscal 2025 as compared to the year before, including a 2.3% increase in indirect-cost support.
  • The number of awards to medical schools, however, fell by 7.5%, while the number of principal investigators (PIs) holding those awards declined 4.2%. Among medical schools nationally, there were 991 fewer NIH-funded PIs in 2025 compared to 2024.
  • Our initial analysis suggests that the overall increase in NIH support to medical schools despite fewer awards in 2025 was achieved in part by disbursing multiple years’ funding to a larger-than-usual subset of awards in this single year. The consequences of that practice, and of the declining PI numbers, for future years remain to be determined.
  • Schools of Public Health fared worse, with total 2025 NIH support declining 4.8% and the number of funded PIs down by 5.8% in comparison to 2024.
