Nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, the film follows a young Parisian girl whose (badass awesome) cat leads her to unravel a thrilling mystery over the course of a single evening.
One of the things that immediately stood out for me, as has been the case for many of these films this year, was the animation. Everything is very, ah, how do I put it? Pointy? Stretched out? Both? It's definitely pretty original and memorable, plus it's one of those styles that not only makes everything look like this surreal painting but also brings it to life. The stuff with the tall creature and the cloudy guy/effect was cool, too. The mystery itself was…
A quiet young girl losing her childhood innocence while dealing with the recent death of her father, a mother who’s on the hunt for the murderer, and an inside pet cat who’s comfortably cute during the day and an agile seeker who ventures into the streets at night.
A Cat in Paris is film that begins with a simple family story regarding the grief surrounding a loved one’s loss, but quickly shifts itself into one about the crimes of Paris. It’s a striking amalgamation of solidified colors and cozy drawings, crafting an elegant zing of composed patterns and cartoonish figures. Only elevated by its grand, cultural and playful score, the look and feel of the film is much more immersive than it appears. It may not avoid certain cliches within animated film characters, but the beautiful sense of whimsical adventurousness is undeniably thrilling and satisfying.
Can I get some more adult animated crime cat movies, please?
I think this is just as good a time as ever to recommend the highly underrated cat noir, Felidae.
