No one ever found that vessel. He never heard my replies, my frantic shouts into the radio as the sea breeze whipped against the harbor station walls.
For a time I thought I could have saved him. But he was lost, doomed to something obscene. Or perhaps only to himself.
These were his final words, to the best of my recollection:
(1) "Mayday, mayday, mayday!"
(2) "This is the DHH André."
(3) "The ship's adrift en route to Copenhagen."

(9) "The ones it hasn't stolen away to the depths already."
(10) "Time is running short."
(11) "The boat, my mind…slipping away, taking on water."
(12) "Sinking from the weight of my sins."
(13) "The beast will soon bury us at sea."
(14) "Lord, how I wish we'd never found that accursed tome."
(15) "The rancid text we dredged up from the mud."
(16) "If only we had smothered it with flame at first sight."
(17) "But instead I invited its wickedness into my heart."
(18) "Its words were foreign, at first."
(19) "But soon they possessed my very spirit."
(20) "Their intent sprung forth in a rapturous symphony."
(21) "A festival of craving, of ravenous purpose."
(22) "The crew must be sacrificed — all of them!"
(23) "How else could the words grace me with the presence of their maker?"
(24) "I began with the captain, whose throat I slit in the safety of his cabin."
(25) "Then I watched with glee as the men turned on each other, paranoia claiming the lives of many."
(26) "But I was careful, ever patient; not a soul suspected my guilt as I slunk in the shadows."
(27) "As their numbers dwindled, I could feel the maker's wild eye nearing, its call for death a swelling tempest 'neath a dark sky of damnation."

(29) "Their blood is splattered upon me still."
(30) "I know now that I will not be spared, that I was nothing more than feeble prey to the unknowable."
